India’s first ever pod hotel, Urbanpod has opened in Andheri East and it’s already making waves with its all-encompassing pod like suites.

Think Minimal, Think Pod

Following in the footsteps of Japan, China and Singapore, Urbanpod is a 140-unit hotel which offers pods as tiny as 50-sq feet and 90-sq ft, as reported by the DNA newspaper. The brainchild of Shalabh Mittal and Hiren Gandhi, it will cater to the new-age travellers looking for a quick bed and breakfast. According to The Hindu, the pods will be manufactured in China and then set up in Mumbai.

With a first of its kind venture in India, these pods have single occupancy suites and suite pods for couples. The bathrooms are outside and are to be shared. The hotel also has a cute little café for a quick bite or lounging around when not chilling in the pods.

What We Love

The pods are as minimal as possible but the best bit is they come cheap. For INR 2,030 per night which is inclusive of breakfast one can get a classic pod for single occupancy. The pods come with WiFi, AC, television, dresser and a wall mirror, hangers and of course a comfortable bed.

It’s perfect for anyone on a short stay in Mumbai, especially for the people on work trips. It’s affordable and utilitarian and welcomes in the new age of minimal travelling and staying options.

So, We're Saying...

This sort of a capsule hotel is sure a novel concept in India, however, with its cheap tariffs and proximity to the airport we’re thinking it’s sure to make waves in Mumbai. The plan is to expand it and keep these pod hotels close to railways and airports.
