The latest trend to hit the yoga bandwagon, aerial yoga is a gravity-defying style which uses a cloth hammock to then help hold up the traditional yoga positions.

Defy gravity

Since you now understand our ‘hanging out’ joke in the headline, we’ll move on to explaining what exactly this exotic form of yoga is. The hammock-like apparatus {not to worry, it really is strong} is meant to assist you to with resistance so that you can strengthen your body. Used like a swing or rope, it will support the hips for forward bends and back bends, legs in some asanas and you’ll find that some postures which are difficult on ground, will be much easier mid-air with the hammock giving you more manoeuvrability.

So think tree poses {sounds simple, right?} with one foot on the fabric and the other off ground, and you’ll be working on your core. The downward dog, upside down, too will make you strong, especially the shoulders. Plus, it is great fun to be suspended in that position and is a good way to ease you into the programme. Simple backbends and lotus asanas also take on a slightly different avatar here, but you’ll certainly enjoy the acrobatics of it all.

Teacher Training

The classes are led by Sahiba Singh, and if you’re already a yoga pro, then perhaps you too want to catch onto this kind of yoga and teach it too. They have certification lessons so you can step up to the challenge and become an aerial yoga instructor, but make sure that you really listen to her well before you think you can take on a class, it is a difficult task. Do try and wear cotton as slippery workout wear tends to work against you when suspended in the air!
