Five Performances You Must Catch At The Attakkalari India Biennale 2017

Aakanksha posted on 27 January

Expected to be the biggest of their events thus far, the 8th edition of the The Attakkalari India Biennale look very promising. With performances, workshops and masterclasses to keep you engaged for 10 days, we pick out five performances that caught our eye. From a performance on loop to a continuation of a tale told nearly 40 years ago, here's what we won't be missing.

Ketima, South Africa

Coming to you all the way from South Africa, Ketima which means ‘run’ in Sepedi {one of the primary languages of the country}, this one traces the development of a human. From being a helpless baby to a toddler and then through to adulthood, the performance by the Vuyani Dance Theatre weaves in emotion, thoughts, feelings, and actions, and how eventually, you get caught up in mundane life. But this one explores how sometimes, something unpredictable will change this and halt the rat race.

When: February 4

Where: Chowdiah Memorial Hall, 16th Cross, G.D. Park Extension, 2nd Main Road, Malleswaram

Price: INR 200, INR 300 and INR 1,000. Tickets available here.

Timings: 7.30pm

Bhinna Vinyasa, India

Bhinna Vinyasa, performed by the Attakkalari Repertory Company, is all about metaphysical journeys, and how they are affected by internal and external forces. But it’s not just that these exist, it explores how all these forces create change in people and in community as a whole. It touches upon the concept of time and space and how we’re all connected by these factors. Expect to watch multiple realities to interweave in varied locations and internal transformations in characters to leave you thinking well after the curtain comes down on this one.

When: February 6

Where: Gurunanak Bhavan Auditorium, Millers Tank, Bund Road, Vasanth Nagar

Price: INR 200 upwards; Tickets available here.

Timings: 7.30pm

La Suite, Germany

In a sort of tribute to dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch, La Suite is choreographed by Fabien Prioville, and picks up where Bausch’s work, Café Müller, left off, over 40 years ago. Using the same characters, or hugely inspired by them, the lead figure is jazz singer, and the whole performance continues telling the stories of its six characters. The only difference is that this time, they’re part of an artificial concert.

When: February 9

Where: Ranga Shankara, 36/2 8th Cross II Phase, JP Nagar

Price: INR 200; Tickets available here.

Timings: 7.30pm

Meant to almost hypnotise the audience, this one sees three performers use simple, intense, intimate and even seductive movements to appeal to your senses. It give new meaning to the relationship between sound and movement, and there by hearing, becomes seeing. The rhythm builds to a crescendo and the energy, will blow you away. We hear that this one creates a physical and acoustic experience that is rather surreal.

Where: Alliance Française – Bangalore, 108, Thimmaiah Road, Opposite U.N.I. Building, Vasant Nagar

When: February 10

Price: INR 200; Tickets available here.

Queen-Size, India

With very turbulent times in the country surrounding the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality, Queen-Size is emotional but questioning. Delving into the raw, sensual, mechanical and deeply emotional encounter between two men, it challenges the questions about privacy and dissent. It actually runs for 45-minutes but is continuously looped, so you’re welcome to come in and leave at particular intervals. Or, stay as long as it lasts.

When: February 4

Price: INR 200; Tickets available here.
