What we ate

We arrived at Bekal to eat lunch on a Sunday. But the Bekal Special meal {served on a plantain leaf} we asked for wasn’t available. Instead we settled for the Fish Curry Meal with Kerala style fish curry {other option is a Mangalore-style curry}. Our sides included Kallumakai Fry, green mussels pan fried with pearl onions, plenty of coconut and cumin, and Syrian meat Fry: small chunks of beef cooked with slivers of coconut and dry spices. The thali comprised the yoghurt and coconut-based Moru curry, Sambhar, Kerala rice, chutneys and a drumstick curry. Mackerel fish came dunked in a tangy, coconutty curry as part of the thali. The light thali was the perfect foil for the fiery beef fry and the mild but flavourful mussels. A hot moong dal payesam ended our meal which we were not fans of. We belong to the “kheer should always be chilled” club. We also washed down all of this with a Kokum juice and coconut milk mixed Sol Kadi.

The DL on the Ambience

Don’t expect anything fancy, but this is not your regular Mallu mess either. Kayal {same owners}, another Kerala joint down the road offers more of a mess-like set up. Simple but elegant wooden furniture, bright lighting and gleaming crockery make up Bekal’s decor accents.
