Bangalore designer Ron Dutta’s Fatherland label focuses exclusively on restoring the rapidly disappearing textile artistry and jewellery workmanship that India was once renowned for. The online store showcases hand-woven saris, blouses, menswear and rustic tribal jewellery {including a splendid comb revival collection}.

Currently, Fatherland has six different collections that you can choose from. We flipped through them and are eager to share our favourites. First up, is the Gandaberunda-inspired lineup. Often seen in sculptures and murals {especially in South India},  Gandaberunda is a mythical, two-headed bird that is said to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Screen prints of the majestic beast have been featured on a variety of apparel but we love the vibrant hand-woven cotton sarees, regal looking bandhgalas in silk, and black and white langa davanis {a traditional two-piece saree that’s worn in South India}.

Sabeki is a collection that’s dedicated to Bengal weaves. We love every piece here, starting from the vintage blouses that are crafted from handspun khadi and exquisite lace. The soft cotton and tussar saris that range from gorgeous off-whites to deep reds and greens too are worth carting off. The Homecoming section is all for men and features kurtas, dhotis, and bandhgalas in shades of grey. We particularly love the mojri collection that’s made of handspun khadi and ikat silks. The chequered, patterned, and printed shoes can add a dash of elegance and style to your look.

A Worthy Accessory

The Comb Series Revival Series, we are sure, will grab the most eyeballs. Inspired by vintage combs used by India’s tribals, each piece here is made from copper. They’ve got earrings, brooches, pendants, and cocktail rings – all of them one-of-a-kind and worth the splurge.

Finally, under the Tribal Revival Jewellery tab you’ll find stunning handcrafted pieces from tribes in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Andhra. Here, the intricate nosepins under the Valli collection and the bold pendants made from brass, copper, and silver strung on to a line of beads in Atasuta collection win our vote.
