The Fatty Bao Turns Two With Carbon Prawns And Yes, The Raindrop Cake

Ten-Second Takeaway

The Fatty Bao turns two and they've pimped up their menu with a hoard of innovative dishes from across Asia. Also, hello Raindrop Cake! I heart you.

Not Just A Pretty Sight

Called Fatty's Travel Tales, this food trail is out to bring you flavours of Mongolia, Japan, Vietnam and China among other South East Asian countries. The menu mostly features bites, and ones you should straight dig into are the Carbon Prawn Tempura, which is coated with black edible carbon. I thought it was uber pretty, but if you don't like to see your prawns in a charcoal hue, don't let the colour deter you, seriously. The yuzu mayonnaise it's served with is lip-smacking!

The Tiger Sushi Rolls feature spicy salmon, cucumber and a very flavourful orange gel — nothing disappointing, but unfortunately the only fish dish on the menu. The Saigon Bun Rieu, a crab broth of vermicelli noodles, garlic, chili, lime and slightly heavy on the tomato, is a great option for seafood fanatics. The broth is overly pungent, so you could either love it or hate it, but the crab meat is sublime. A total must-have cocktail is the Silk Route, which is a vodka-based drink and comes with a concoction of black salt, lime and kala jamun.

Sugar Rush

Raindrop Cake

There are two desserts on the menu, and both are equally stunning. The Raindrop Cake, which is a collection of tiny Japanese water cakes, is so delectable, I actually had two portions. And, this is not just a pretty sight. Gorgeous Dianthus flowers, kiwis, melons and a hoard of other citrus fruits hidden in molecular spheres that were of the perfect texture {not at all jelly-like}, were paired with a slightly salty miso soil and soy milk to cut the sweetness of the dessert. The fruit confetti sprinkled all over made it all the more pretty. The Sakura Winter is a pristine white meringue dish with a parfait in the centre full of really, really cold yogurt, cream cheese, cherries and citrus. Divine!
