Ten-second takeaway

Can’t take a foodie road trip? Don’t stress, JW Marriott takes you on the NH48 food festival – from Udupi to Coorg

Going local

It’s practically the dream route in the south, and apart from the wonderful vista, the National Highway 48 is amazing for food too. Starting in namma ooru, it weaves its ways through Coorg, hits the coast at Mangalore, known for its culture as well as cuisine. Oh! And before you start on the food, do make a pitstop by the bar for cocktails infused with local spices. Cinnamon Whiskey, anyone?

South by south west

Fish, of all kinds, be it seer, pompret, mandeli are made to order, but in their own marinades ranging from mint to chilli paste and semolina. Then troop to the Coorg counter for your share of freshly-steamed Kadambuttu (rice balls) to be relished with spicy and delicious Pandi Curry. Or load up on Akki (rice) Roti with Kumbala Curry (pumpkin curry). Then, sneak off to Mangalore for Chicken Sukka (surely you don’t need an explanation for that?) and the famous Silver Fish Curry (laden with garam masala and coconut milk) from the Shettys’ kitchens. Vegetarian? No worries. Try the Gulla Huli (Eggplant curry) and Thondekai Palya (a Parwal-esque gourd) straight from the kitchens of the Udupi Brahmins.
