    What Makes It Awesome?

This is a journey about a loving mum turned into a home baker. Bindu, a resident of South Bangalore, started baking cakes 20 years ago for her son and gradually for his friends and their neighbours. After years of appreciation, and a little push from her now grown-up son, lead her to start her own baking business, as the year 2019 began. I spoke to her on Thursday this week and asked her to parcel me two of her best cakes, this weekend. This Saturday afternoon, Bindu personally delivered chocolate (her best selling) and red velvet (my favourite), each in a clear, glass jar, labelled “Joy in a Jar” with a warm message below, “from our family to yours”. I was delighted to see them and couldn’t wait to devour them. But they looked so pretty, that I just had to stop and click some pictures. So after a 10 min photo session (I had to do justice to their looks), I opened the jar to an even better view of the top layer of the cakes. The chocolate cake had a layer of cream, brown chocolate mousse, topped with ripe red cut strawberries and tiny chocolate chips. The red velvet was covered in off white cream sprinkled with red dust. I couldn’t wait to dig in the layers of sponge cakes paired with a layer of cream in between. I took the first bite of the dark brown cake and landed in chocolate heaven. It wasn’t long before I had eaten the entire cake. The cake was moist, creamy and pleasantly sweet. I am impressed by how well chocolate goes with strawberry. I am yet to slice up the red velvet, but going my how fresh and delicious the chocolate was, I do not expect anything less! Bindu makes her cakes with the freshest ingredients, on the very same day of delivery. She takes orders during the week up to Friday and proceeds to bake on Saturday morning, well into Sunday. Till now, she delivers only on weekends, across Bangalore city. Flavours available are chocolate, red velvet, vanilla, strawberry and her recently introduced rum cake. Each of them, set in an attractive jar. She is open to expanding her products and planning to start cheesecakes soon too. In case you are looking for something specific, you can try requesting and who knows, she just might whip it for you! Orders can be placed through the Instagram handle – Joy in a Jar or through the site: https://joyinajar.co/. Each cake is priced around INR 200. So order one and you will surely be blown away.
