An eco-friendly homestay, by a river’s edge, Olaulim Backyards is perfect for when you want to skip the crowds and get a taste of Goa’s laidback vibe. When not lazing about, you can scuba dive or go kayaking.

The Other Goa

Located just outside the busy town of Mapusa {around 11 kms from Panjim}, Olaulim Backyards is a rustic homestay that sits at the edge of the calm Olaulim River. This laid back getaway is run by a couple— Savio and Pirkko — who were keen on providing visitors with a slice of Goa that’s in stark contrast with the crowded beaches and party hotspots. This place is ideal for those of who want a relaxing vacation where you can leave behind the hustle bustle of city life.

While the owners do stay on the property, you won’t have to share living quarters with them. Instead, you can pick from a series of rustic, eco-friendly cottages that are surrounded by greenery. The Golden Oriole Cottage, for example, is perfect for a couple and is built at a higher point so that you can look out to the pool and the lake. If you are travelling with a couple of friends sign up for the Indian Pitta Cottage that opens out to the fields. Do note, that the owners and their children love animals. So cats, dogs, goats and even a donkey call this place home.

Dive In

Not just here to relax? Well, there’s plenty to do around here. Your room rent also gives you the in-house facilities. You can take canoe rides down the creek or borrow a bicycle to explore a typical Goan village nearby. Bird watching, fishing, and nature walks are also on offer. If you insist on visiting the beaches, North Goa’s best seafronts — Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, and Candolim — are about half an hour away.

The homestay has teamed up with local experts for scuba diving and snorkelling too. The half-day adventure will take you to Grande Island. They’ll provide you with training and the equipment. And you can explore the waters to discover shipwrecks, coral bays, and plenty of marine life. When booking your room, do ask them for the deets on the diving experience.
