Auroville-based Small Steps, which is a part of an organic clothing and accessories brand called Upasana, makes re-usable bags that are fashionable and convenient.

One Step At A Time

Way before plastic got banned in Karnataka, Small Steps decided to take it upon themselves to save the planet in their own little way. The fabric used in their re-usable bags is a blend of cotton and polyester in equal measure. It’s durable, light and fungus free. Keeping it minimum, they have only two styles — a backpack and a side bag. They come in sets of five, in catchy yet earthy shades. When folded, these bags can turn to the size of your cell phone, so you can just slip it in the corner of the tote you’re already carrying. When you’re shopping, undo the magic that the bag is and stuff all your vegetables, fruits and munchies in it. The backpacks can hold up to 7 kilos, while the side bags up to 12 kilos. So not only is this perfect for your minimal-fashion moods, but they’re also quite convenient.

A Better Place

Small Steps gives a special discount to school students and their eco-clubs. Rural schools get free bags if there is sponsorship available. For large corporate orders, they even print personalised logos on the bag. They also employ rural women to empower them, and if you are inspired by their cause, you can even go volunteer with them. Now we’re never seeing plastic again.
