Ten-second Takeaway

Slam poetry takes centrestage at the first edition of the Verses Playoff Festival in the city.

Slam it out

The Verses Playoff Festival is a travelling festival of slam poetry. Lucky us, we get the festival a good fortnight before Delhi. It’s put together by the Delhi Poetry Slam and Slam India, and promises to be a cracker of an evening.

What to watch for

For one, some stunning talent. Our favourite is Alok Vaid-Menon, one half of the performance duo Dark Matter, who are known for their incisive, intense, and hilarious pieces critiquing the gender binary and white supremacy.

Then there’s the indie folk musician Zoya, poet and feminist Aina Singh, and other comedians and spoken-word poets.

Overall, they’re aiming squarely for your inner bohemian, but we think a love of the spoken word suffices. Early bird tickets have sold out, but there’s still time to grab the standard tickets. Organisers also want you to know that the festival will be a trans-friendly, hate-speech-free zone.
