Combining boxing, cycling, combat training and CrossFit all under one roof, The Hood really is the place to get fighting fit.

In The Hood

Watching The Arrow and The Flash on TV may have inspired you to turn vigilante, and The Hood, considered India’s first hyper-gym facility, will equip you with the skills to be one. Started by former cricketer Abinav Shankar Narayan, considered one of the country’s best trainers, and interior designer Shruti Choudhari, The Hood aims to reflect the organic nature of what pop-culture calls ‘a hood’ – courage flirting with danger. So ready to take on a challenge {or die trying}, we landed up at The Hood. Obviously, we’re gluttons for punishment!

Core Training

Decked out in black, white and fluorescent, the graffiti-filled space stimulates you instantly. Weights, ropes, machines, gym bars and fellow fighters dot the large space, so anywhere you look, there’s a wonderful sense of community. Never mind that this community will probably have to peel us off the floor after our workout! But with constant encouragement from the trainers {it sometimes borders on chiding, but they, motivation is everything you’ll get into the groove.

They currently offer three Core Programs – Fightcraft, Namma CrossFit and ABSinthe. Fightcraft needs you to already be a bit in shape as it mixes all kinds of martial arts through the week. The program includes Muay Thai, Kalaripayattu, Jiu Jitsi, Krav Maga , and Capoeira {a Portuguese martial art} among others. Perfect for those who want to supplement fitness with strength and quiet confidence.

Mixing It Up

Namma CrossFit, already a familiar concept in town, combines disciplines of weightlifting, gymnastics, track and field. We greatly appreciate the trainers for their {occasional} compassion of changing the workout to suit our fitness {or lack thereof} levels. If you’re looking to build endurance, pick ABSinthe. It combines low-impact activities like yoga, cycling and rowing with high intensity ones which involve kettlebells, battling and ropes. Discarding the use of machines of any kind, they use manual equipment to help increase strength and cardiovascular endurance. Sounds tame, but if you didn’t get into the NDA then this is a great options!
