What Makes It Awesome

Have you been to The English Tearoom in Alwarpet? This small and oh-so cosy café is a must-visit if ambience comes first.  A place that looks like it’s straight out of an Enid Blyton book, expect distressed teakwood tables, wicker chairs and walls in cooling colours of pale teal and white along with beautiful paintings and wall hangings. Definitely, one of the most Pinteresty cafes in Chennai!

We dropped by with our girl squad on a Sunday evening for a pot of tea and snacks. Their Marina Salad that comes with peanuts, coconut slivers, lime and raw mango was delish; although you’d probably rather go to Marina beach and get the same thing for a more affordable price, but hey it’s too hot outside! We also got a slice of sticky toffee pudding served with warm custard. An absolute cracker of a dish!

And of course, there was tea! We tried their Saffron Kahwa Green Tea that offers a whiff of calming spices, nutty almonds, rose petals and saffron. This was amazing! We also tried Christmas Mulled Spiced Tea that had strong hints of star anise, cloves, cinnamon and cherry for some real Christmas feels. The English Tearoom also serves coffee, brekkie, sandwiches, pita pockets, pasta, pizza and low carb options as well.

Next time we’re thinking of going all-out English and digging into The English Tearoom's Afternoon Cream Tea option where you get an assortment of sandwiches, pastries and warm raisin scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, served with two pots of tea. For two people it comes up to about INR 800 and is available from 3 pm and 7 pm.

Pro-Tip

You can skip the Peony White tea which was disappointing as it tasted like wilted flowers.
