Saravana Stores is to us what Walmart is to the West. Only everything is ultra-budget. Their stores operate on such large quantities of inventory that there’s almost always new stock coming in. That means products like clothes and footwear are available in almost all sizes at all times and in large variety. Having said that, not all of their merch is worth buying, plenty of what they sell can be bought elsewhere, so why come here? That was our question as we scoured the palatial main branch on Ranganathan Street, T Nagar and here’s what we uncovered.
5 Reasons We Think You Should Budget-Shop At Saravana Stores ASAP
Yep that’s right, and it’s not just one tiny counter with a disgruntled employee sitting behind a stack of plastic cups, it’s a massive room’s worth. Everything from streamers to balloons to colourful party hats and masks! There’s a separate shelf for gifting bags and wrapping paper, a counter with just plastic cutlery, and even a separate section for Christmas baubles and ornaments. We honestly think Saravana Stores can be your one stop shop for any party, and it’s all budget so you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank.
Gifting For Little Ones
Normally this would facilitate a trip to a toy store or a maternity store where you’d invariably pick out a cute little outfit for the toddler, which probably costs way more than it should. To make matter worse the little tyke will outgrow the outfit in a matter of months. So skip that and head to Saravana Stores. There’s row upon row of feeding bottles, baby booties, clothes and even hats for toddlers. For the slightly older kids, there’s a large collection of board games, sports equipment (like Table Tennis rackets and footballs), dolls, toy cars, tricycles and plush toys to choose from including life-sized teddy bears to cuddle! It’s all super cheap and you won’t have to worry too much about it not lasting long.
Men's Casual Footwear
Gone are the days where only big names like Nike and Adidas make the coolest shoes, fresh designs and classy looks are sweeping the entire Indian shoe market thanks to generic brands that offer good looking shoes at affordable prices. Saravana Stores offers just that, great looking casual footwear for men. There’s loafers, moccasins, sneakers, slippers, sandals, trainers and even boat shoes, available in a range of colours. Just take a look at the photo, whatever you see there is around INR 2,000. Do note that they also have formal shoes and sports shoes, but we think you’re better off going to places like Bata and Sportus as quality there is better. The same applies to women’s footwear unfortunately, we think Pondy Bazaar nearby is a better option.
Men's Formal Wear
Yes, we just recommended coming to a budget departmental store to buy formal wear. Why, do you ask? Well chances are if you’re a millennial reading this, you probably only ever go to a formal event once or twice a year. You don’t need to buy yourself fancy suits or Sherwanis, just get budget ones that fit right and we’ll guarantee you look good. No other better place to do so than the Saravana Stores in T Nagar as they’ve got a collection of readymade suits, Sherwanis, jackets, waistcoats in a large variety of sizes. So if you search hard enough, you should be able to find a piece that fits you just right. Prices for suits start at INR 2,000.
Now the reason why saree shopping made the list is because the saree section in the main branch is an entire floor big. It’s so big, it’s bigger than the previous two entries combined. That’s because it’s one of their most popular reasons for people to come shop there. You can get Erode Vayal sarees, Malgudi Crepe sarees, Banarasi silk sarees, Kancheepuram silk sarees and a whole host of others. There’s plenty of staff to help you out if you’re looking for something particular, and an entire floor for just cloth material and fabric. Prices for sarees starting at just around INR 200!
