How To Crack The Saree Shopping Scene In Chennai

The wedding season has officially begun! Irrespective of whether you’re the bride or the guest, you’re going to need a saree (or sarees!) to wear for the festivities. We’ve rounded up the best saree stores in Chennai to make shopping that much easier.

Kanakavalli

Located in a sprawling heritage mansion, Kanakavalli houses a breathtaking collection of sarees made from weaves from all over India. Ahalya, the founder, personally curates the sarees, and also works closely with weavers to revive rare motifs and traditional patterns through their sarees. So, if you’re looking for a statement Kanjeevaram, look no further than Kanakavalli. Although the sarees are on the more expensive side {the silk sarees here start at INR 10,000}, they are truly one of a kind.

Nalli 100

It is impossible to talk about saree shopping in Chennai without talking about Nalli. Nalli is one of the most iconic saree stores in Chennai since its inception in 1928. Nalli 100 is a hop, skip and jump away from the original flagship store in Panagal Park. Apart from a huge selection of sarees, the store has an entire floor dedicated to fabric. Rolls and rolls of silk, cotton, rayon, velvet, tulle in every conceivable form — plain, printed, embroidered, dotted with motifs, and everything in between. The only limit is your own imagination.

Sundari Silks

Sundari Silks is special, because apart from their handpicked collection of sarees, they stock accessories and readymade blouses as well. So, you can shop for your whole look in one place. Sundari Silks is also a great place to buy readymade festive menswear, and adorable ethnic outfits for kids. They even have fabulous home décor which make for perfect wedding presents. They go on sale every year in the month of August, where you can get discounts going up to a whopping 50 per cent off!

Tulsi Silks

Tulsi Silks, which has been around since the early 1990s, was once Mylapore’s best kept saree secret. Today though, the store has a cult following {that includes celebrities like Jyothika and Samantha Prabhu} for its vast collection of silks, georgettes, Benarasis, Tussars and linens. Tulsi Silks has even been presenting at Lakme Fashion Week for the last couple of years. The store has its own weaving unit, which means you can get the saree of your dreams custom made for you, in the patterns and colours that you choose! Just make sure to place your order well in advance to your event.

Palam Silks

Palam Silks was born out of the marriage of Chennai’s textile behemoths, Kumaran and Nalli. Jayasree Ravi, the founder, has managed to open a store that is unique in its offering while reflecting the silk history and heritage of her childhood & marital homes. What sets Palam apart is their capsule launches that focus on a specific weave or feature, like their “high rise” silk sarees featuring a single border that can make the wearer look up to three inches taller! Their sarees are traditionally made with a modern aesthetic, and naturally, perfect for today’s brides.

The Amethyst Store sells readymade blouses, but they have also recently set up a ‘blouse studio’ where you can design the custom blouse of your dreams! They also stock Amrapali jewellery, festive clutch bags and salwar/churidhaar suits. Even if you don’t pick up a saree, make sure you have cake at the café downstairs.
