A Book Lover's Guide To The Best Lending Libraries In Chennai
While most people don’t have a lot of time between work and life to read regularly, having a library membership will get you back in the habit. And Chennai has no shortage of libraries — public and otherwise — so there’s nothing stopping you from signing up! Most of these libraries have been around for years, and they cover everything from research books to text books and obviously a whole lot of fiction to transport you into another world! If you’ve always wanted a library membership, but never knew where to go, let us help you out.
As one of the four National Depository Libraries in the country, the Connemara Public Library receives a copy of every book, newspaper, and periodicals that are published in the country. It’s also one of the oldest libraries having been established in 1896! The building itself is worth the visit and they have a large collection of books, textbooks and a reference room. You can read more about the library here.
First opened in Cochin in 1979, Eloor has branches in Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, and Trivandrum. While most government libraries cater to older books, newspapers, and periodicals (much like the Connemara Public Library), Eloor worked to cater to other readers.
They have a large fiction section which includes new arrivals, classics, science fiction, romance and children’s books. They also have a great collection of non-fiction books, international and national magazines, cooking books, self-help, travel and pretty much everything that you could want in a library. You only have to spend INR 1,000 for your membership, which is then returned to you when you decide you don’t want to be a member anymore. Each time you borrow books, you pay a borrowing fee and that’s it.
A Chennai-based lending library, Easwari was established in 1955 on Lloyd’s Road before expanding and opening more branches all over the city. Much like Eloor, they have a vast collection of books covering all genres including Indian fiction, Philosophy, Religion and even regional language books.
They have two membership plans which are enticing enough to sign up today. And what makes Easwari even more unique is that they deliver books right to your doorstep! So, sign up for plan number two and you can avail of exciting deals where your books are brought to you every month at a minimum cost.
