What happens when you get an enterprising Italian to open a budget Thai food joint in the city? You get Thai Food House, a tiny restaurant with a big Thai menu including Som Tam, big bowls of noodle soup, and pad Thai.

Same Same But Different!

if you are hitting up St Mary’s Road in Alwarpet, don’t forget to stop by for lunch or dinner at Thai Food House. The place is small but comes with cosy wooden booths, nice lighting, and an upstairs section too. The menu is actually huge, and offers soups {their noodle soups are apparently a specialty}, starters, salads, mains that comprise curries, stir fries, and pad Thais.

Vegetarians, not to worry. There’s plenty for you here including everything from spring rolls to tofu chilli and even Thai style vegetable tempura. Meat lovers, start off with the fragrant and deep fried Lemon Grass Chicken. This comes with sweet chilli and spicy and sour green {with plenty of fish sauce} dips. Move on to mains, and if you love spice, try the stir fried minced chicken with basil and chilli {birds eye chillies guys} to be eaten with lots of sticky jasmine rice.

I would also recommend the pad Thai here, which I tried with prawns {other options are tofu or chicken}. The flat rice noodles came laced with sweet tamarind sauce, and was topped with plenty of prawns, fresh crunchy sprouts, crushed peanuts and squeeze of lime. Do ask for their fish sauce if you like the taste, because these come with fiery chillies and can be a good addition to the noodles, because these guys don’t put any spice in it. Plus, there’s also the trusty chilli flakes available on the table.

Started by Italian  chef Cero Cattanio {originally from Rome, but now settled in Chennai}, Thai Food House opened three years back, when Cattanio realised that there was no place in the city for authentic but also budget Thai food. Armed with a Thai chef, and ingredients flown in all the way from Thailand, Cattanio started his little Thai restaurant which looks like something straight out of Khao San Road.

Little Thai House also does lunch boxes for delivery and this comprise a salad, a starter, a main and a rice or noodle. The restaurant is also on Swiggy and Zomato.
