Last Call, barely two-and-something months old at Khan Market, is a great place to hang out if you want a low-key vibe, outdoor seating and great gin cocktails.

To Terrace Or Not To Terrace

The first nice thing that hit us about Last Call was how they’d cleverly managed to circumvent the ‘no terrace’ rule in Khan, without actually breaking it. With full-length glass doors that open out onto a balcony from a part-covered patio, you’re sitting outside without officially ‘sitting outside’. And it works brilliantly for the place – in nice weather, the area is delightful, with breeze constantly blowing {gently, though – your skirt will not Marilyn Monroe itself} and nice, relaxed yellow lighting giving it a very night-time bistro effect. The music is easy, but nice – and never loud enough to have to shout over. The lower floor has more of a typical bar-slash-lounge vibe, but the upstairs area spoke to us more, and had more character – so we’d recommend sitting there.

Tea {Cocktails} & Tapas

Between two people, we tried an elderflower spritzer, a drink called Ginnies, and a cocktail called High Tea. The elderflower spritzer was delightful but, to quote the one of us that drank it, had a very ‘brunch’ vibe, so would perhaps be better for earlier in the day. Ginnies was nice and very ‘summer’, with a gradient, and the multiple flavours of wine, gin, honey & citrus working well together. The stand out of the evening, though, was the High Tea – Earl grey infused with gin and lemon, and whipped with egg whites; it was fresh, light, and just the right kind of mildly sour and not at all overbearing.

The food menu is far more extensive than the drinks {but we’re told the drinks menu will be expanding substantially soon}. The vegetarians absolutely must try the Goat Cheese Salad, that comes with a smoky goat cheese mousse that’s rife with pine nuts {mmmmm}, the Burrata (you’ll find it in the small plates section} and the Mezze Platter that has a distinct {but interesting} hummus and baba ghanoush. Non vegetarians will love their Smoke Ham Croquettes – deliciously cheesy – and their Prawn Dynamite {the real star of which is this Tabasco mayonnaise it comes with}. The main courses looked exciting, but we couldn’t try them all, so we chose a Tenderloin Steak. The logic was that if you can do tenderloin right, you can be trusted with most meats – and, to their credit, they did it well. Ask for it well done for best results, but the marination is perfect. We also hear their pizza and savoury waffles are incredible.

Right now, if you ask for dessert {we always do}, you’ll be told it’s not available yet {even though it is on the menu}, so you may have to go else where to get your post meal sugar fix. We’re also assured there’ll be desserts in full swing in a short while, so depending on when you’re reading this, it can’t hurt to ask.

So, We're Saying

Choose Last Call if you’re looking for a nice, outdoor evening with interesting cocktails and nice tapas. Also a good place is you don’t like the music ludicrously loud {on the second floor}.
