Whether it is drowning your sorrows or just having a jolly good time with your friends, everyone needs a well equipped bar for it {and a cheap one too}. We know, finding the right one for yourself can be quite a hassle {considering there is so much to choose from} so here is our handy guide of the cheapest bars/watering holes in the city.

Hauz Khas Social

Whether it is their classic cocktails or in-house originals, we love them all! Their time tested cosmopolitan retains its original charm, with added candy floss and orange fest for a kick you’d never expect while.

Their Blue and Red Pills comes in beakers with a syringe full of blue curacao and berries; pick the one you want {as the name suggests} and they’ll inject the cocktail with your choice. And those are just the tip of the iceberg! Try their towering LIITs, where you can choose from a variety of flavours or their combination of gin with Earl Grey tea. We always leave the place with so many stories to tell; we’re sure you will, too!

Out Of The Box

What we love about this place is that it caters to all moods. They have three levels; one for when you want to get down to some tunes, one that works great for post-work catch-up cocktails, and a terrace space for when the weather is enjoyable {or perhaps a date}. They’ve got some of our favourite imported beers and alcopops, and we’re definitely going to drop by to try those, soon. They also have ladies night twice a week.

What To Order: Cantaloupe Affaire, Caribbean Thunder

Where: 9A, Hauz Khas Village

Contact: +919650177778 ,+919899950252

Price: INR 300 – 400 for beer; a round for INR 500 {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 1am

My Bar Studio

A successor to My Bar Grill {which is in the same area}, they’ve upped the ante with their food menu and interiors. The decor is quirky, and the food is reasonably priced and good, though we only suggest heading for a quick drink or two, because the music makes it hard to hold a conversation.

They do, however, have an outdoor section that still allows for a quiet moment with a partial view of the lake. Head there with a whole bunch of your pals for days when you want to pinch those pennies.

What To Order: Boston Ice Tea, Kaffir Lime Cosmopolitan

Where: 3rd Floor, Plot 30, Hauz Khas Village

Contact: +91 70655 33215

Price: INR 500 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 12.30am

The Chatter House

For the beginning and middle of the week {the dull days that can do with some added excitement}, The Chatter House will do just fine. On Monday, all their Margaritas are priced at INR 225 a pop, Tuesdays have great deals on a variety of alcohol throughout the day, and Thursdays are there to sip on some Jameson. Supplement your drinking with some of their jalapeno cheese balls with their special pesto dip.

What To Order: Aam Panna Vodka, Green Tea Bourbon Cooler

Where: Lower Basement, Epicuria Mall, Nehru Place

Contact: 011 2623

Price: INR 900 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 12am

Summer House Cafe

This restaurant-cum-bar-lounge sits on prime real estate, right down the road from the bustling lanes of Hauz Khas Village. It also makes for easy access when you’re in no mood to brave the infamous HKV traffic just for a couple of drinks.

While the food is nothing to write home about, we enjoy the electro-swing music nights they host over the weekend, and they’ve got an extensive and affordable menu of cocktails to with them, too. For a quiet drink or two, we’d suggest you visit them during the week; the weekend has more of a ‘grab a drink and move your hips’ kind of vibe!

What To Order: Mai Tai, Mint Julep

Where: 1st Floor, DDA Shopping Complex, Aurobindo Place, Hauz Khas

Contact: +91 9350927000

Price: INR 130 for a pint of beer; INR 600 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 12.30am

Find them on Facebook here.

Escape Terrace Bar Kitchen

This one seems to be a bit hit and miss; we’re never quite sure if we’re going to get an evening of energetic Bollywood music or a more relaxed Sufi vibe here. We recommend the outdoor seating for a chilled-out evening of not needing to dress up. This little bar is far from high-maintenance, and might be just right for when we’re feeling that way, too.

What To Order: Tequilla Sunrise, Beer {any one of their fresh brews}

Where: Second Floor, Galleria Market, Gurgaon

Contact: +91 8800395444, +91 8800199444

Price: INR 800 for two pints of beer each

Timings: 11.30am – 12am

Area 69

This ahaata always beckons us after a long day of work, when some comfort food, a cocktail {or four} and the warmth of exposed red brick walls is all we want. For those of you who aren’t in the know, an ahaata is Gurgaon’s unofficial term for a place that sits right next to a theka.

You can bring your own liquor in, or ask your server to run across and buy it for you. Almost as good as kicking back at home with a few friends, but without the added stress of playing host! Reminiscent of Delhi’s old hangout Turquoise Cottage, you’ll promptly turn into memory lane the minute you enter.

What To Order: Whatever you fancy from the theka

Where: 1, Yadav Market, Wazirabad, near Ardee City, Gurgaon

Contact: +91 8527362121

Price: Theka rates apply

Timings: 12pm – 12am

Harry’s

For days meant for long conversations with old friends, head to Harry’s. Their space is small but cosy, and the music adds character to your experience instead of overpowering it. Their drinks include traditionally mixed cocktails as well as their own concoctions.

We love their martinis, and they’ve got a wide range to choose from; would you go with the apple & cucumber or the caramel popcorn one? We say try them all at least once.

What To Order: Tangerine Caipirojka, Orange and Green Tea Mojito

Where: 2nd floor, Shop 62, Khan Market

Contact: +91 9818453166

Price: INR 600 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 12.30am

Find them on Facebook here.

Beeryani

Their name indicates exactly what to expect at this joint; biryani and beer. We headed there with a few friends for the first time and discovered their beer bucket {five Kingfishers for INR 600} and polished off more than we’d care to admit.

For all beer lovers, they have your standard beers starting as low as INR 100, as well as draught beers. You can pick between a mug, pitcher or, if you’re feeling adventurous, the tower.

What To Order: Southern Ice Tea, Black Russian

Where: SDA market, opposite IIT Main Gate

Contact: +91 9999243021

Price: INR 400 for a round of beers {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 1am

Find them on Facebook here.

Lanterns Kitchen & Bar

Walk in, and you will be bathed in dim blue and pink lighting. This is the kind of bar we’d head to when drinking in bulk in a large group. Their prices allow our wallets to heave a huge sigh of relief, and they’ve got a wide range of liquor {including draught beers} to try out.

It’s a little out of the way, but if you’re willing to go the distance, you’ll leave a happy camper with lots of juice in your belly.

What To Order: Mango Basil Freezer, Pinacolada

Where: 163/164, Rajindra Bawan, Rajendra Place

Contact: +91 9015447000

Neighbourhood Bar & Grill

Tucked away behind a discreet door in the Sector 15 square {that’s the one behind Galaxy Hotel and next to Fabindia}, it sounds like the kind of place where everybody knows your name. With its bright red interiors and warm paper light globes, it doesn’t disappoint.

The menu lists the standard fare, but luckily whatever they do, they do it right. We’re happy to get away from the malls for a change and head straight to this friendly neighbourhood joint. Cheers to that!

What To Order: Gin Sling, Manhattan

Where: Sector 15 Market {behind 32nd Milestone} Off NH8, Gurgaon

Contact: +91 8750907711, +91 8750907722

Price: INR 650 for one round {for two}

Timings: 11.30am – 11.30pm

Find them on Facebook here.

Turquoise Cottage

Need we say more? Alright then, we’ll say this; it’s not a patch on the original, but if you’re not stuck on the days of yore, this is still a great place to catch a live gig or a comfortable playlist of familiar rock hits. As always, chilli chicken recommended.

What To Order: Beer Blaster, Planters Punch

Where: First Floor, JMD Regent Square, MG Road, Gurgaon

Contact: +91 9871211119, +91 9871098963

Price:  INR 650 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12.30pm – 12am

4S

An all day watering hole in the guise of a Chinese restaurant, 4S has consistently remained a standard go-to joint among Dilliwaalas for weekly drinking sessions. Blame it on the wallet-friendly pricing, an exhaustive menu of Indian Chinese comfort food, and the dimly lit second floor, making it appropriate for all kinds of situations.

Expect to run into the regular family crowd that Defence Colony market is famous for, and expect to be fascinated as to how 4S seamlessly accommodates all demographics.

What To Order: Mojito, Beer

Where: A 26, Defence Colony Market

Contact: 011 41664314, 011 41664316

Price: INR 600 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 11.30pm

Find them on Facebook here.

Bootlegger

Tucked away in bar central, Hauz Khas Village, Bootlegger manages to retail the HKV charm with well-priced cocktails. Too bad you can’t always take advantage of their terrace {oh hey summer}, but when you can, we recommend booking a semi-private, floor seated shamiana.

What To Order: Homemade Ginger and Cucumber Lemonade, Ruffino Chianto

Where: 1A, Hauz Khas Village

Contact: 011 66575744

Price: INR 400 for a round {for two}

Timings: 12pm – 1am

Find them on Facebook here.

Beer Cafe

The Beer Cafe should be first on your list for early evening drinks {the kind you have right after work}. Tucked away in an otherwise purely functional market, the Beer Cafe comes complete with a giant screen, every type of beer, and Indian appetisers to boot. Do not miss their masala peanuts and always order the giant beer dispenser.

Only downside? The seating is a tad cramped, so tables end up being too close together. But hey, alcohol is a great conversation starter.

What To Order: Heverlee Witte, Erdinger Dunkel

Where: C-12 SDA Market

Contact: 011 40634766

Price: INR 250 for a round of beer; INR 300 for a round {for two}

Timings: 11am – 1am

Find them on Facebook here.

My Bar

We recommend bookmarking this one only if you’re with a large group of friends; it has the potential to get borderline seedy. Located in the heart of Connaught Place, My Bar is always crowded, and a wait to be seated is always on the menu. If you can see inside {dim lighting}, you’ll notice that the only attraction is possibly the alcohol rates.

What To Order: L.I.I.T, My Bar Overdose

Where: G-68, Opposite Alka Hotel, Outer Circle, Connaught Place

Contact: +91 9711018188

Price: INR 500 for a round {for two}

Timings: 11am – 12am

Find them on Facebook here.

Sam’s Cafe

On a massive terrace in the middle of Paharganj, Sam’s Cafe is reminiscent of a Goan shack with a relaxed vibe {read: pyjamas, feet up and chappals} and you can ask for pretty much any rendition of what you see on the menu. You can expect to see a lot of the regular Paharganj crew whose happy hours don’t always involve alcohol.

Sam’s keeps things simple; no cocktails or innovative shots here, just good ol’ alcohol in one of Delhi’s most iconic neighbourhoods.

What To Order: Margarita, Screw Driver

Where: Vivek Hotel, Main Bazaar, Paharganj

Contact: +91 9811029125

Price: Beer at INR 125 – 250 a pint

Timings: 11am – 12am

Find them on Facebook here.

1 Oak Cafe And Bar

Image courtesy: 1 Oak

Image courtesy: 1 Oak

Even though the name is ripped off from one of NYC’s most popular clubs, we were very happy to stumble upon this hidden gem. Tucked away under a flyover, 1 Oak is spread over two floors with outdoor and indoor seating sections. Wooden floors and furniture, it’s the perfect watering hole for when you want some privacy. Also, they serve hookahs, so really take advantage of that solitude.

What To Order: Peach Bellini, Redbull LIIT

Where: Moolchand Flyover Complex, Defence Colony

Contact: 011 41006641

Price: INR 700 for a round {for two}

Timings: 11am – 1am
