We went exploring in the lanes of old Delhi and stumbled upon this tiny gem. Situated in front of an optician’s store, and manned by Shanu Hussain, we learn that this little storefront has been around since 1785. if you want to look at some gorgeous items from a collector’s treasure, this is your trove. We totally dig the minakari inlay work on a pair of silver Christian Dior cat eye glasses, and the half moon glasses in gold.
‘Watch’ where you’re going
Shanu {extremely courteous and inviting} will scour through the shelves and drawers to show you things that’ll take your breath away. We saw a working compass with Robert Frost’s Road Not Taken engraved inside the cover, a vintage Omega, monocles and grand cuckoo clocks! We must sadly tell you that most of what he has to show is not for sale, but he can get you some pretty similar looking pieces if you so wish. Shanu also keeps some exquisite bone-china plates with gorgeous calligraphy from the Mughal times.
Mechanism magic
Lots of collectors find themselves at Shanu’s doors because he can get you old-timey pieces at good prices, and also sells some himself. For instance, you will find almost 25 different pieces of a spring-based eyewear that you can expand and contract to fit on your nasal bridge.
We say, get those sneakers on and get ready to mill in the crowds of Chandni Chowk and don’t forget your sunglasses!
