Shortcut

For art lovers in the city, look no further than the National Gallery of Modern Art at Jaipur House, India Gate. Inaugurated in 1954, NGMA is home to a wide array of paintings and sculptures.

What’s In It For Me?

For both novices and art connoisseurs, NGMA has plenty to offer. The authorities have guided walks through the day where you are given a detailed explanation of the exhibits. You also have a chance to explore special exhibitions, details of which NGMA shares both on its website and its Facebook page.

There are three time slots for the guided walk – 11am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm. NGMA doesn’t charge for these walks, but you are expected to be on time at the reception area of the gallery.

One of the most valuable gifts that NGMA received was in 1950, a large body of paintings by Amrita Sher-Gil.

NGMA had also acquired numerous paintings by European and Far Eastern artists who visited India in the 18th and 19th centuries, with portraits and exotic Indian scenes.

Iconic Artwork

NGMA has a mammoth collection of works. It exhibits paintings, graphics, and sculptures of modern artists. But, one of the best features of this gallery is that it helps amateurs organise their own exhibitions. The school is represented by Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Ramkumar Kinkar,

The displays are changed every month, barring the master pieces such as Amrita Shergill’s Self Portrait, Two Women, Musicians and Bathers and Jamini Roy’s Krishna and Balarama, Yashoda and Krishna.

Among the contemporary artists, it has works of Maqbool Fida Husain, Souza and Raza.

Virtual Gallery

NGMA has its own virtual gallery on its website, that houses a vast collection of artwork by famous artists from across the centuries. What’s wonderful to see is the history and story behind each artist and collection they have.Apart from art, NGMA has other varied interests, NGMA also organises tree-plantation drives at the NGMA lawns at Jaipur House premises.
