All of us have a type. Ours is pastels and gota borders. Or maybe, an understated handloom sari that is never going to cry for attention.

We’ve honestly never liked wedding outfits bedecked with the shiniest Swarovski or anything too sparkly. In fact, we know so many folks who’d naturally pick a traditional weave, or a restored heirloom lehenga over the usual sequins and pearls. If you’re also more of the handloom/heirloom-loving wedding guest, we’ve found the best brands to shop at.

A word of caution: We’re looking primarily at friends/cousins of the bride, who’d love an Anita Dongre or an Anju Modi, but since they are a touch *cough* expensive, need something more realistically within reach.

We dig their classic silks and ethereal chanderis. Their latest collection of saris is just the right amount of festive, and some of their pieces are very Raw Mango/Anavilla but only way more reasonably priced. For smaller, haldi-type functions, we find ourselves liking this range.

The Loom

One of the few brands still doing shararas, The Loom’s handcrafted beauties are perfect if you’re into colours {brights or pastels, both are okay} but still like the natural sheen from raw silk, or pants with delicate gold trimmings, this is your brand. Our two favourites are this white angrakha and this blue sharara. Once you’ve finalised your outfit, they’ve got jewellery and juttis to match.

IndyWeaves

Everything at IndyWeaves is sourced from weavers, and they claim to have something for all age groups {including us twenty-somethings dressing like forty-somethings}. We’re eyeing this red dress for our bestie’s mehendi and this chanderi suit for when we’re dragged for a family dinner for our favourite cousin. Bonus: They’re both currently on discount.

Another Gurgaon-based brand dabbling in Indian weaves, we like how they use the brightest colours together without making them look too jarring. If ikkat, khadi or Arunachali weaves are more your thing, you can pick up amazing saris at prices that won’t kill you. A case in point is this pink jamdani and perhaps this bright blue sari that’ll go so well with chunky silver jhumkis.

This brand’s lehengas are made for times when you want to dress up without looking too dressed up. They’re bright and versatile enough to last way after the wedding shebang is over. If lehengas aren’t your jam, stick to these fuss-free anarkalis.

Their special brocade lehengas are pure love. I mean, how can you not obsess over this one? And, really, how funky does this white ghagra choli look? For a more hipster look, you can dress up on these lines.

We recently ordered a peach linen sari and were happy with the delivery time, the quality of the material and the price we paid for it. We’re now getting ourselves this lehnga for our cousin’s engagement {the other pieces are equally pretty, TBH}. This stunner at INR 1,700 and this bright, colour-blocked one are pure love. Plus, the brand’s got sexy halter blouses to match.

Parisera

This Chennai-based brand caught our attention when we were looking for hipster linen saris that wouldn’t cost a lung. Parisera obviously had lots of those and then, we found ourselves going back to this site for designer sourced nine yards that are completely handcrafted. Kanjivarams, tussar silks, jamdanis and even banarsis… The designs are timeless and traditional. So, your mum’s going to be super happy too! Our faves? This and this. Only waiting for a family wedding now.
