Ram Swaroop Agarwal’s Bedmi Puri & Nigori Halwa in Chandni Chowk

Shortcut

Breakfast doesn’t get better than eating Ram Swaroop’s Bedmi Puri at eight in the morning, right in the middle of Chandni Chowk’s Sitaram Bazaar.

Puri pleasure

Every morning at eight, Anil Kumar Mittal sets up shop as he has done for the last 40 years. The shop itself, Ram Swaroop Agarwal Halwai, has been around for eight decades {that’s practically new there!}. Tucked away right next to the Lal Darwaza in Sitaram Bazaar, all you have to do is follow the unmistakable aroma of freshly-made puris and desi ghee straight to the counter.

Dessert drift

Served with carrot pickle and a spicy aloo sabzi, we can only go on and on about the Bedmi Puri and Sabzi, but it is what comes after that truly has our hearts fluttering {and our tummies rumbling}. The sweet dish, Nigori Halwa is a crispy sweet ball filled to the brim with yummy halwa as filling: Need we say more?

We suggest you get yourself a plate before 12.30pm because naturally, he sells out pretty soon. In the evenings, you can get some piping hot samosas and kachoris, with sweet, hot jalebis too.

Occasional occasions

During festivals, Ram Swaroop takes on a whole new avatar. We saw mathris piled up high for Karvachauth and people coming in through the day to buy gulab jamuns, khoya mithais, gujiaimartighevarphenipetha and barfi.

This is a sweet and snack shop that tells the story of old Delhi food and we can’t wait to listen to more of the same.
