The New Thali Menu At Social Is All One Needs!
What Makes It Awesome?
I love meals in a Thali, it's like a supermini buffet for one and the quintessential Indian tasting menu before Michelin kitchens made a thing of it. Most regional cuisines have a version of it though the most famous are the South Indian ones. A thali is also a great way to sample a restaurant's menu without ordering half the menu, I been hoping more places get in on the game. So, when I heard about the Social Thali menu, I was there the week they launched it. In their typically quirky style, Hauz Khas Social launched 3 variants, Indian, Chinese and Continental, I would love to use a 'laughing hysterically' emoji for the last two variants but then, why not? Whoever said we can't have a Chinese or Conti Thali? After all, they do exist as platters and knowing Social, they were going to do a good job of these. We chose the Indian and the Chinese, who can resists dishes like Butter Chicken or Butter Garlic Chicken for that matter? The Indian Thali was a total steal, I can't stop harping about the price points at Social, very well thought out for the kind of portions they do. We had a full desi experience of Chicken Tikka, Daal Makhni, Butter Chicken, Rice, Tandoori Roti, Papad and Salad, with a Gulab Jamun because which thali is complete without dessert. The chicken tikka and butter chicken were perfect and more so because this is not a hardcore Indian kitchen, so a perfectly charcoal-grilled tikka and a creamy curry aren't their forte and yet it was super memorable. Same was for the Chinese thali, a spread with Spring Rolls, Momos, Butter Garlic Chicken, Rice, Noodles and a chop suey type - crispy noodle Chinese Bhel, we would actually go back just for that, what a lovely bar snack it would make. The Momos at Social are legendary as it is, so having them as a part of the thali was such a treat, next time we go, we plan to switch the thalis, since we were digging out of each other's meals. The continental thali will have to be the third meal, though it does boast of Grilled Vegetables, Pasta, Salad, Peri Peri Chicken, Fries and Bread! This is a great addition to their huge existing menu, ideal for this weather, where a compact yet big spread is easier to stomach. Giving multiple options other than the usual North and South Indian is a bit of a coup too but then Social always does things differently.
What Could Be Better?
I just hope this isn’t a promo! These thalis are ideal as a permanent fixture on the menu.
