Quirky designs that will appeal to the chic-hippie soul, Coco Roots adds an edge to alternative jewellery. A small but striking store on the main Anjuna-Mapusa road, Coco Roots officially opened about a year ago, though the owners Tony and Gali have been jewellery designers for over 20 years. And honestly, the experience shows.

What Makes It Awesome

The fact that they take naturally occurring material and turn them into these striking statement pieces.

Rings, earrings, septum-rings, statement neckpieces... Innovative and intricate designs characterise most of their pieces. Be it shells, bones, feather, wood — in the skilled hands of Tony and Gali they’re all putty. Gali tells us that with each piece, they want their customers to take back a small part of nature. Over the years, they have also incorporated, brass, silver and mixed metals into their work, but their heart and art lies with the natural materials. Gali will happily sift through hundreds of designs, each unique thanks to the material, sometimes making it very difficult to stick to your pre-decided binge budget.

At the store, you will find the designer duo sporting some of their newest pieces — amongst our favourites were these simple rings designed out of wood and oysters — “pieces that bring together the land and the ocean”- as Gali fondly calls them. The statement ear cuffs — one of their most recent design experiments are also doing extremely well, we’re told. Another of our favourites were these rings and earrings with tribal patterns etched on them, carved on water buffalo horns. They have jewellery both for mean and women and Tony and Gali are the in-house models. And don’t worry, if you like a particular design but want it in a different material — they will most likely be able to get it custom make it for you.

Once the designs are finalised by Tony and Gali, they are hand etched by carvers in Indonesia and then packaged in cute colourful boxes. To keep the sense of personal touch Gali adds these handpicked feathers from her travels in Goa and Israel, to each of the boxes. The pieces are themselves quite affordable priced anywhere between INR 150 going upwards of INR 5,000. But one thing for sure, if you’re there at the store, you’re unlikely to come back empty handed, quite literally speaking!
