How would you like that the next time you are visiting Mapusa Market in Goa, you can check the stories behind the sellers?? Or maybe even have a map telling you exactly which shop to visit for a specific item?? And be able to do all of this on your phone or iPad??

Tell Us More!

The Mapping Mapusa Market Project just went live and it is super exciting and fun. It involved artists, designers, writers, teachers, students, and members of the public to create this beautiful website that shows you the market in a whole different light.

It beautifully documents and lets you explore the complex and exotic space that is the Mapusa Market. There is of course a map, but it is no ordinary online map. It is very detailed, including pictures of the shops/sellers that are mapped out there. And it will tell you exactly what you can buy at the shops or sellers. It has stories that tell you about the even more interesting stories of these people that work and sometimes live in the Mapusa market. Told from different perspectives, it uses illustrations, photographs, videos and interviews to make it very interactive and facilitate the entire data gathering that they have done.

Is There More?

The most fun thing that I enjoyed were the 100 Rupees Challenge which was a one day project where different participants were given, yes INR 100 to spend in the market. And at the end, one was reading different experiences by people about all the odd, fun, and familiar objects you could buy in the market. I for one am definitely going to try this.

And we thoroughly enjoyed each one showing our regular go-to market in this whole new funny and quirky way. Even the stories about the sellers that come there only for the weekly Friday market in Mapusa gave us a peek in to their lives. It will definitely be a great conversation starter the next time you are there.

What Else?

Facilitated by the Goa University’s Mario Miranda Chair Visiting Research Professors Program, the British Council, Arts & Humanities Council and many more. We just love how this has made Mapusa Market come alive for us.
