What Makes It Awesome

Want to take a road trip but got only a day? You can hit up Bidar in Karnataka and soak in some architectural heritage and history. Located just 120 km away from Hyderabad, Bidar is a perfect getaway if you want to take off for a day. It is a small town that is situated on the borders of Karnataka and Telangana and perched on top of the Deccan Plateau. Abounding in several tombs, it is popularly known as the ‘City of Whispering Monuments’ and a visit to Bidar is incomplete without checking out

Bahamani Tombs — giant, dome structures that hold the remnants of the Bahamani Kings. But first, let’s get to the basics. We recommend you start for Bidar around 6 am to beat traffic and watch the sunrise; with a quick pitstop for breakfast, you’ll reach by 10 am. Start your day with a brief visit to Nanak Jhira Sahib, a Gurudwara which is also said to have a sweet water fountain. When you are there, don’t miss out on the tasty halwa outside the Gurudwara that is sold at INR 20. Later, you can visit Mohamad Gawan Madrasa, a 14th-century monument built by the Bahamani rulers.

Keeping the best for the last, Bidar Fort is where you can head to now. Behold the beauty of the forts, its gates and walls — right from a museum to intricate carvings on Rangeen Mahal, you can tour into the 15th-century’s history. Keep an eye out for the carved wooden pillars, couplets engraved on tiles, mother-of-pearl inlay work, and more. After an elaborate tour of the fort, park yourself at the fort’s canteen where you can relish some coffee and food.

Pro-Tip

On your way back, be sure to visit Choubara (the clock tower) to shop some Bidri handicrafts — items ranging from jewellery to home decor made out of gunmetal. Here, you can also check out the artisans handcrafting these goods, which is quite an interesting experience in itself.
