The environment-friendly vehicles will be the latest additions to the satellite township which is being planned as a smart city with a green public transport system.

New Town just keeps getting cooler. After a host of green initiatives like e-rickshaws, the area will see environment-friendly electric buses in a few weeks. These are specially planned for places which don’t yet have any public vehicles plying {and there are quite a few of these in this suburb that is still coming up}.

The folks behind the move — Hidco — will begin with three 32-seater electric buses in a few weeks which will ply circular routes in New Town, Rajarhat. The routes will end in important points linking the city, such as Ultadanga, Karunamoyee, Chinrighata and Chinar Park.

That’s not all. New Town residents will soon be able to hire self-driven electric vehicles via an an app-based car rental company! A plan for monorail is also on the cards.

The plan is to equip New Town with a rapid transit system where vehicles will be pollution free, battery operated and will move on short routes.

So, We're Saying...

Despite the distance from the city, and its still-in-work state, New Town is increasingly looking like a great pace to stay in, isn’t it? It’s certainly leading the way in creating a sustainable public transport network that can really make a difference in this polluted city. Perhaps the main city areas will soon follow!
