Age No Bar: We Spoke To 40-Plus Mumbai Women Who're Still Rocking A Fit Lifestyle

With the year coming to an end, we’ve decided to get some fitness motivation for ya’all. In case you’ve been looking out for healthy plans, and how to go about it, we’ve got you covered.

We spoke to six 40-plus women from Mumbai and got their fitness plan and secrets out. Read on to get inspired and take home some truly inspirational lifestyle tips.

Sadhna Shah, 60

Sadhna Shah has been doing yoga for almost all her life now, in phases and periods.

Fitness Routine: However, for the past three years, Sadhna has been regularly doing yoga. She has a yoga teacher, Nikita Shah who comes home.

Her daily routine follows; getting up at 6am every day. And an hour’s walk is a daily essential. For this, she often goes to Mayfair garden, Lallu Bhai park, or if she’s in the mood for a little bit of sea breeze, Juhu beach.

#GetFit Mantra: Stick to home-cooked food, and incorporate dry fruits in your day-to-day diet. In fact, Sadhna has a go-to guy in Zaveri Bazaar, Shetty’s from where they get their bulk dry fruits.

Apart from this, she has also been visiting a dietician, Yogita Goradia, at Criticare hospital. In fact, she tells us, she also makes energy bars at home – with honey, oats and more. The takeaway? Stick to home-cooked food, and experiment with healthy food.

Sunanda Chatterjee

Sunanda Chatterjee loves doing yoga. For her, it centres her life and lets her have control over her body.

Fitness Routine: They have a yoga teacher {Akwant} who comes home and teache a group of ladies who get together at Sunanda’s home. Walking is also a huge part of her ‘being’ fit, and so she makes the best use of the green and calmness that Powai offers her. In the evenings, she’s always at the Powai lake, and the lake home garden. If you need some persepctive, she walks seven kilometres every day!

#GetFit Mantra: Sunanda prefers her home-cooked food. She has a routine and she sticks to it. She enjoys her Tulsi green tea as much as she enjoys her soaked almonds and walnuts.

Sudha Iyer, 50

Sudha Iyer, a Powai-resident has been practising yoga for almost five years. Now a fully-certified yoga teacher she also takes yoga classes {in batches} twice a day at her home.

Fitness Routine: Sudha enjoys doing yoga, and makes sure to never skip a class. Apart from that, she also recommends ‘Runtastic’, an app to keep a track on the kms you’ve done, and the intake of daily calories.

Hold our beer because Sudha Iyer also runs half-marathons. She generally does 10 and 21 kilometre runs and is also a regular at the Powai marathon.

#GetFit Mantra: Yoga is all that Sudha preaches. She tells us it helps in inculcating a disciplined yet a very calm lifestyle. She sticks to home-cooked food and skips processed food completely. Her go-to grocery store is Nature’s basket where she often stocks up on wine and micro-greens.

#LBBTip: If you’d like to attend her yoga classes it’s INR 1,800 for 12 classes month. Every class lasts approximately for 75 minutes.

Rajshree Doshi, 52

Rajshree Doshi is the director for Teach for India, and has been practising yoga for decades. Battling the bad network in the Himalayas {where she’s was travelling currently}, she spoke to us over the phone, and discussed her love for travel, and a healthy lifestyle.

Fitness Routine: An early riser, Rajshree’s days start at 5 am. She goes to Nariman Point post which she goes to Seva Sedan for her yoga classes. Neerav {her instructor} is instrumental in keeping her fit.
The classes at Seva Sadan are for three months, four times a week and costs approx. INR 7,000 for three months.

#GetFit Mantra: She’s always been a fan of Zumba, and aerobics. She often goes to Priyadarshani park for her walks {also where she did kickboxing}. Jogging at Chowpatty and eating healthy home-cooked food is something she swears by. And for her doze of organic wheat, she has been going to Satyam Collection.

The only tip she has for people to stay fit is to travel and eat right, read right and most of all look after yourself.

Alpa Turakhia, 51

Alpa Turakhia is a PR personal who has been in the lifestyle, and film industry for almost 15 years.

Fitness Routine: Alpa loves working out, and has been doing so religiously for over a decade now. She has a personal trainer, Rajiv Singh who also trains the new kids in Bollywood {like Sooraj Pancholi}. She is a regular at the Crossfit of Powerhouse in Juhu. She loves that the workouts change at the gym almost every day and this pushes her to do her best.

#GetFit Mantra: She swears by the Hipster salad at the Bombay Salad Co., and loves getting her fresh vegetables from Nature’s Basket. Her diet includes flax seeds, oats, protein shakes, and lots and lots of salads.

Though most of all, she tells us it’s important to keep yourself happy, physically and mentally.

Shirin Ebrahim Merchant, 43

Shirin is a hair dresser and a make-up stylist at her salon, Kut n Make. She loves exercising and going to the gym as frequently as possibly.

Fitness Routine: Shirin frequents the New York gym at least five days a week {in the mornings}. An annual membership here will set you back by INR 14,000.

She often alternates between weight training and the high intensive interval training {HIIT}. She skips bread, sugar and sticks to chapattis with jawar and home-cooked food in general. This includes white eggs, proteins, and lots of salads.

#GetFit Mantra: It’s all about balancing the lifestyle, and the meals. She believes cutting down on carbs and sugar helps in the longer run. As for eating out, when she does go out, she tries sticking to Subway {chicken teriyaki} with multi-grain bread and skips mayo completely.

#LBBTip: She has signed up with the dietician, Zainab Nagdwala who offers online consultations like diet plans, and how many calories to stick to. Her plan is available for three months for people who’re interested.
