What Makes It Awesome

Find gorgeous handmade accessories and home decor items at Lagstal, a Gangtok-based label that creates these items out of bamboo.

Lagstal, which was started off in Gangtok, aims to bring the traditional crafts out of Sikkim to all of India. It combines the contemporary designs but always keeping intact the Sikkimese touch.

All of the items are hand-woven and handmade by craftsmen from Sikkim. We’ve been told the craft reflects the traditional art of basket weaving by Lepcha and Nepali communities in Sikkim. All of the items at Lagstal are crafted out of bamboo – which is then coated with mustard oil for natural shine and moisture-protection for the long-lasting effect. Lagstal oftens puts up stalls to showcase their products in exhibitions across the city, so that’s something to look out for.

Check out the bamboo chandeliers, the artsy bamboo butterflies and wooden furniture as well (for this, they take special orders). You can find wall decor that has been inspired by the simple and colourful culture of Sikkim – carved with gem stones like coral, jade and even pearl. The motifs on the wall art have designs like lotus, or even a peacock feather which are subtle yet very traditional to Sikkim.

Price: INR 150 upwards for stationery, INR 3,000 onward for woven bags
