Elephanta Island Experience

What's Happening

Board a ferry from the Gateway of India and start your journey with Swadesee on October 6 from 8:45 AM onward. This tour with islander Milind Mahadev Mhatre offers a chance to see a different side of the island. While most of us have been to Elephanta to see the world heritage caves as tourists, we haven't really had a chance to explore what else the island has to offer visitors.

The tour starts with breakfast on arrival. Once you've eaten, the tour will take you first to the caves with the guide via toy train, and then through the natural beauty of the island - you'll have to walk through forrested paths to reach the local experts' home village. Get a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn more about the communities that live here: the Koli and Agri communities. What's more you'll also have a chance to truly appreciate the island's natural beauty - the Arabian Sea in monsoon time, complete with the lush monsoon greenery makes for some truly stunning shots.

Once you're done with the exploration of the caves and the village, we're sure you'll have worked up quite an appetite! So luckily lunch is included in the trip price. A simple, home-style meal is on offer. Once done with your meal, you'll board the ferry and head back to Mumbai by 3 PM.

How's The Venue

Elephanta Island is a UNESCO world-heritage site that draws tourists from around the city, as well as the world. Known for the ancient cave system with stunning rock art dedicated to Lord Shiva, the caves are a superb expression of Indian art. The island as a whole is also one of the few inhabited islands off Mumbai's coast and has a unique eco-system all its own that's well worth exploring.
