The handloom industry’s favourite designer, Anavila Misra, is opening her first store in Mumbai, and we got a sneak peek at her simple, beautiful and affordable collection.

Going Back To The Roots

Anavila Misra’s latest collection centers around a folk theme with pastels and light fabrics. The store itself is colour-coordinated and easy to walk through. There’s a section dedicated to blouses and sarees, then the long kurtis and of course the home decor section consisting of curtains, cushions and wall art.

The home decor is mainly created by Santhal tribal women who are bringing their skilled embroidery to the mainstream. However, our favourite bit was this tiny section dedicated to young girls. Anavila has decided to experiment and showcase handmade dolls draped in sarees, a concept long forgotten in India. So farewell, blonde Barbies!

The light fabrics of the collection and the home decor section which is contemporary yet traditional – perfect for the young women who don’t want the hassle of an overbearing saree. We love how in spite of the linen fabrics which are weaved by the highly skilled artisans, this high fashion brand is priced reasonably, yet is a sensation among the celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor and Konkana Sen Sharma.

The range starts at INR 4,800 onwards for dupattas, INR 13,500 for saaris, INR 8,000 for tunics, and INR 6,500 for trousers.
Anavila’s strong take on understated saree fashion is wonderful. The sarees and her kurtis are easy-wear and casual, yet have a traditional feel to them. So we’re planning on picking up one of those beautiful wool-silk sarees with the intricate zari embroidery and patches before the festive season takes off.
