Gully Tales Sassoon Docks Walk

What's Happening

For centuries, Mumbai remained a major attraction for traders and colonisers owing to its location, natural ports and her potential for trade and commerce. The city grew in stature over time, change in dynasties and its colonisation by the Portuguese before the final session to the British in 1661.

As commerce grew, traders from all over the world started arriving in Bombay to explore business prospects. One such trader, David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew, arrived in the city with his family, went on to establish several businesses and built many prominent structures in Bombay: the original Sassoon Dock being one of them.

One of the oldest docks and the first wet dock constructed in Bombay in 1875, Sassoon Docks is also one of the largest fish markets in the city. The zone offers one of the most interesting and memorable experiences to travellers.

Tucked in a corner of the historic Colaba district of South Mumbai, Sassoon Docks is a melting pot of cultures of Kolis, Banjaras, Tamilians, Kannadigas, North Indians and others. The docks bustle with all kinds of fishing activities including a noisy fish market where women line up to sell some of the most famous and the rarest varieties of fish, crabs, oysters and more. The Sassoon Docks Heritage Walk will take you though this colourful history and bring you back to the present with juicy tidbits and checking out the fishing activities around you.
