Beyond Mohammad Ali Road: 16 Eateries You Need To Visit For Iftaar (And After!)

The information in this post might be outdated

The time to celebrate is here as the month of Ramzan has kicked off. As the lanes and moods get lit up, we can’t wait for evening after evening that will be spent eating the mouth-watering preparations so typical to this time. If you’re craving kebabs, nihari and jalebi with rabdi combinations, but have no time (or patience) to go to Mohammad Ali Road, we have got a list of other feasting joints you could head to instead.

Khairani Road, Saki Naka

Take a stroll through Khairani Road during Ramzan, and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to the number of street food options you'll have. Our favourite? The crispy chicken, without a doubt. If street food isn't much your vibe, you can also check out the sit-down restaurants along this stretch that serve up delicious portions of Iftar specials throughout the month.

Price: INR 75 upwards

Nice Fast Food Corner, Santacruz

Open from 6 PM to 11 PM only, Nice corner is a small standalone food shop always handling a long queue hungry for baida roti, chicken tikka, and mutton seekh kebab served with spicy green chutney. With INR 300 sufficient for two, this is an on-the-fly spot by the main road with seating only in your own car.

Price: INR 150 for one

Firoz Farsan, Byculla

A hidden gem, Firoz Farsan is takeaway only place known for their patrel biryani (which surprisingly is a biryani without rice) that is cooked with patrel leaves cooked with chicken available from 11 AM – 8 PM. They sell the biryani per kilo starting from INR 300. Not too crazy about biryani? Since the store is primarily a farsan store, try their offbeat farsaans - the paneer-based ones caught our fancy, for sure.

Price: INR 135 upwards

Bagdadi Restaurant, Colaba

A hub for meat lovers, the two things strongly recommended here are kaleji crispy and nalli nihari. And if you’ve been looking for yummy biryani, their mutton biryani never disappoints. What's more, this restaurant is amazing throughout the year, and is supremely pocket-friendly.

Farid Seekh Kabab Centre, Behram Baug

Super cozy seating, kebabs till late in the day (5.30 PM to 1 AM), and lightning-fast service, Farid Seekh Kebab Centre wastes no time. They will serve your table with onions and chutney just as you park yourself and promptly serve the variety of delish beef preparations.

Price: INR 20 upwards

JJ Jalebi, Behram Baug

The closing statement of any meal has to be the dessert. Head to Jogeshwari, Behram Baug specifically, and devour their gulab jamun, malpua (and this is egg-based), gigantic jalebis, while relishing each of these with rabdi. This joint opens only at 5 PM, and INR 100 here is enough for a satisfied soul.

Kakori House, Mahim

If you don’t mind dipping into your pocket just to get flavourful kebabs, then you must either order in or dine at Kakori House in Mahim. Obviously get the Kakori Kebab here, which is a house special and lamb mince kebab you won’t be able to put down. But also try the Gosht Haleem, Machli Lasooni Tikka, and the Mutton Galouti Kebab.

Baba Falooda, Mahim

A must-visit in Mumbai, people throng to Baba Falooda for years. Every evening the stall sees hundreds come by from all over Mumbai, for a glass of falooda. Baba Falooda is one of the top spots for their variety of faloodas. The Royal Falooda remains the best, but the stall also offers several other flavours. If you’re not a fan, get a scoop of Mango ice-cream here, it’s creamy and absolutely delicious.

Price: INR 100 upwards

Cafe Noorani Milk Darbar, Mahim

If you thought the best phirni was only found along Mohammed Ali Road, you need to head to Mahim. This small dairy and milk centre offers the regular phirni all through the year. It’s not too sweet and one of the better ones we’ve tried in the city.

Price: INR 20 upwards

Yadgar Cold Drink House, Bandra

Located near Bandra Station, Yadgar’s small stall has a mighty reputation for its falooda. We recommend sticking to the classic Rose Faloods, which comes with malai kulfi, milk, mava and rose syrup. Yadgar also offers the non-milk kind, which is simply Rabdi Falooda.

Price: INR 140 upwards

Laziz Seekh Kebab, Jogeshwari

Laziz’s reputation for seekh kebab is quite well known across the city. While the sit-down restaurant has several items on the menu, we urge you to try their Buff Seekh Kebab and you can choose from the seekh roll, plate of seekh or seek and paratha plate. They also have a chicken seekh kebab if you’re not a buff eater, but the soft kebabs will easily melt away.

Price: INR 75 upwards

Farid Seekh Kebab Centre, Jogeshwari

Offering kebabs till wee hours, Farid Seekh Kebab is known for its Chicken Malal Seekh and Seekh Kebab that’s made with buff meat. Farid’s menu is limited and focused on the kebab, but the eatery also offers biryani and dal gosht.

Price: INR 70 per plate

Yari Chote Miyan, Versova

If you’re hopping around Yari Road for iftar, you must stop at Yari Chote Miyan. The little joint offers several items, but the hot sellers here include Chicken Roll, Seekh Kebab, Chicken/Mutton Bhuna, and Naan Sandwich.

Price: INR 100 upwards

Shalimar, Jogeshwari

A reputed Mughlai restaurant, Shalimar in Jogeshwari is where you must go for biryani. A sit-down restaurant, Shalimar is great to take your family out for iftar and you can chow down Mutton Biryani, Fish Biryani or the Prawn Biryani here. Stirred with masalas and cooked in dum-style, it’s one of the better biryanis you’ll eat in the city.

Price: INR 500 upwards

Nawab Seekh Corner, Kurla

A legendary spot to grab seekh kebabs, Nawab Seekh Corner now has several branches but the one in Kurla remains the best. They offer Buff/Chicken seekh and you can get it as is, in a roll or with paratha. That’s all that there is on the menu, and that’s why we love the space.

Price: INR 30 upwards

Janata Tawa & Grill, Kurla

A small eatery in Kurla, Janata is quite popular for iftar in the neighbourhood. While their Mutton/Chicken Rolls are worth the trip here, you can also get your belly full on their Chicken Tikka Burra or Mutton Lajawab. The kebabs here are great, and will definitely make your Ramzan great.
