Being a homesick Bengali in Mumbai is a legit issue, and more so, when you're under a lockdown and going back to the city of joy isn't an option. However, we recently came across a delivery joint near Andheri station that has a very dramatic name, but the food's as simple and delicious as a home-cooked bong meal. We'll tell you about our favourite picks from Jamai Shoshthi.
The name of the joint refers to an auspicious day in Bengal, wherein a mother fasts for her daughter's husband. Well, we don't quite know why a food joint's called so but what we do know is that their thalis are simply out of this world. We'd called for a Kosha Murgi Thali (INR 235) which comprised rice, sona muger daal, kosha murgi (4 huge pieces per thali) in a sweetish gravy, a choice between aloo poshto and aloo phulkopi (potato in poppy seeds or potato with cauliflower), aloo bhujiya, and tomato chutney. That's quite a lot to sustain you for 12 hours straight, really.
Since we already dived into main course, let's rewind a bit and tell you about an assorted mix of starters we'd ordered. The Kolkata-style vegetable chop (INR 70 for two pieces) is very unique. It comes with fried groundnuts stuffed inside a beetroot and potato filling, and tastes delicious. Next up was the legendary Fish Fry with mustard sauce A.K.A the Kashundi, which legit makes you miss the feeling of being home. For main course, we stuffed ourselves with the Kosha Murgi Thali (like we very excitedly mentioned earlier) and for desserts, the Payesh had to be called for. It's basically a Bengali version of kheer, where rice is cooked in thickened milk and sugar syrup, which later is garnished with raisins.
Can you believe that after all the hogging, our bill came to INR 780 only? That's how affordable Jamai Shoshthi is. So Bengali or not, you definitely should call for these delicacies from this delivery joint and enjoy a feast.
P.S: In thalis, you can also call for their Chingri (prawn) Malai Curry Thali, Bhetki Maach Thali, or the Kosha Mangsho Thali. They're all equally good. And there's obviously an a la carte menu too for you to choose from. Also, they've got branches in Lokhandwala, Powai, Juhu, Malad, and Versova too.
