Pitaara – The Art Box is a new art space which runs out of a bungalow in Goregaon offering up space for local artists to showcase their art in any form.

What's It About?

Pitaara is the brainchild of Sangeeta Vyas and her husband {an ex-Army man} who moved to Mumbai sixteen years ago from Lucknow. Describing herself as a master of all, be it painting or singing, Sangeeta tells us creativity runs in her blood which made her take this intense plunge and set up her own arts space, following four tiresome months of recce and place-hopping. Pitaara in Hindi means a box of random things – which defines the concept behind the space as well – a platform for anyone and everyone who want to showcase their work, talent or art in any kind or form.

Pitaara runs out of a beautiful old bungalow rented out by the Vyas family and includes a pretty outdoor area and an inside area – both of which can be used for exhibitions, workshops, live gigs, visual artworks basically anything under the sun. Done up and decorated by her and her family {including her daughters}, the idea was to let Pitaara have its own personality and aura.

What We Love

Pitaara, then, is an answer to Goregaon’s lack of space available for the arts – a way of getting people to move beyond Bandra and rightly so. It’s dedicated purely to promote and support the tiny but ever expanding art community of Mumbai – by encouraging more cultural activities in Mumbai. By creating such an informal platform, the intention is to bridge the gap between the artists and the public vis a vis the sheer presence of such a space.

In the past, they have organised Halloween nights, open mic nights, Sufi nights, workshops for kids among other exciting things like a Sunday Bazaar {an exhibition for food and exhibition}.

Anything Else?

The artists can rent the place for a few hours for their performances et al, the profit from the tickets is shared between Pitaara and the artist {with the artist keeping a higher percentage}. For organising events, depending on the space required, one can contact Sangeeta on her mail at pitaaratheartbox@gmail.com.

So, We're Saying...

We’re excited about this exceptional initiative and only hope more exciting places like these keep coming on up in the cultural scene of Mumbai. Pitaara is a wonderful concept and finally gives Goregaon the much needed boost it needed for its cultural activities , or be taken seriously. Move side Bandra, let Gore{gaon} shine.
