The Vasai-Virar Marathon is an annual marathon that is organised in the far suburbs of Mumbai. Since its first event in 2011, hundreds of participants come from in and around Vasai. The marathon generally takes place in December. It’s a full marathon covering 42.2 kilometres starting from Viva College and back. However, if you’re not up for a full marathon, you can also sign up for the half marathon {which’ll cover 21 kms}.

The marathon is exciting because the route is nice, the roads are wide and open. Sign up for this if you’re looking for spectators, volunteering opportunities and more.

#LBBTip: There’s a free transport facility that runs from Virar Railway station for full marathon participants.

Hiranandani Thane half marathon is another annual event that gets participants from all over the city. The half marathon is expected to take place on 12 February, 2017, and the registrations have already started.

The half marathon covers 21 kms, and has a really nice route with ups and downs through a stretch of hilly road. This make the race not only challenging, but also picturesque. People from South Mumbai also go all the way to participate as it gives them a change of landscape and more.

This year, apart from the half marathon, you can also sign up for green run {10 kms}, and the fun run {4 kms}.

Monsoon Madness is an annual event organised by Running and Living Infotainment run by Rahul Verghese held around the Aarey Milk Colony. The marathon is unique mainly because the area is green and leafy, also known as the ‘green land’ of the city, Rahul tells us. He adds, it’s also a tough one to run owing to its rough hilly route.

The marathon is conducted twice a year, once in June and November. The marathon either happens when it’s raining, or when it’s not and either way the participants are drenched. One can sign up for one of the three categories, 5 kms, 10 kms and 21.1 kms {which is the half marathon}.

The big boss of all the marathons in Mumbai, the Standard Chartered Mumbai marathon is a must-do for a runner. The full marathon, that is 42.2 kilometres, takes place annually in Mumbai, with this year’s marathon taking place on 17 January, 2017 {the registrations have been closed however}. It gets participants not only form Mumbai, but also across the country and internationally.

The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is the largest marathon in Asia, and every year gets mass participation. It’s a marathon that a runner either wants to do once in his/her running career, or do it every single time. It’s a hardcore marathon and we recommend preparing for the 2018 marathon from now on.

Kihim half marathon is the most unique out of the all, as the marathon takes place on a flat and hard packed beach of Kihim near Alibaug. Organised by Living and Running Infotainment, this year the event is taking place on 27 March, 5.30 am for which the registrations have already opened up.

The half marathon covers 21 kms. Then there is a 5 kms and 10 kms run as well which people can sign up for. Kihim beach is a beautiful, clean beach with no actually habitation. It’s an hour from the Getaway of India {via ferry}. The best part about the marathon is while running the half marathon, you also see the beautiful sun rise from the beach.
