Learn To Sway And Dance To The Blues At This Workshop In Lower Parel

Blues dancing maybe the newest kid on the city’s block but it’s ready to make waves. This unusual and sensuous form of dance is taught by Abigail Bentley and she will teach you how to dance to the blues.

What Makes It Awesome

Abigail Bentley, health researcher and a trained dancer from London is currently pursuing her PhD in Mumbai. She tells us she got her dancing shoes at the remarkable age of three. Ever since then, she has been trained in ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. However, it was only until three years that she fell in love with blues dancing and voila, decided to try her hands at sharing her love for the blues with others in the city.

From the more popular salsa, jive or to even Lindy hop, blues dancing is the lesser known cousin. It originated in the sub-Saharan Africa area but gained immense popularity in the States among the African-American community. It involves partner dancing, with one leading and the other following, however, Abbie says there are no gender norms attached to who can lead or follow.

What We Love

The blues dance, then, is a really exciting form of ballrooms dancing and we recommend this for anyone who wants to try something new. Abbie tells us one necessarily does not need a partner for this, as you can break out into solo as well but it is essentially a couple dance. It involves a lot of the African dance movements and rhythms like the slow drag or fish tail, and if you get the techniques right, is fun to play around with.

For anyone who’s interested, she is conducting a workshop on Sunday for INR 400 at The Integral Space in Lower Parel. Post – that, if enough people sign up for the classes she will start a six-week course {for beginners and intermediate levels} two hours each for INR 400 per class, followed by a session of social dancing from 10pm to 11pm on Thursdays starting April 6.

Mumbai’s dance space is brimming with new dance forms and exciting ones at that too. With a beautiful new form of dance like the blues dance, which in itself is a tight and small community across the world, Mumbaikars get to experience something that hasn’t been done before. If you’re interested in swaying to the blues, then sign up with Abigail Bentley or contact her on 9967097184.
