5 Vegetarian Restaurants For All Herbivores To Hit Up When In Singapore

The information in this post might be outdated

Everywhere you look, you ‘sea-food’? Fret not; Singapore takes care of all your veggie needs and no, we’re not suggesting you live on apples and carrots. We scoured the city for some spicy yummy vegetarian food and came up with a list of five places we intend to re-visit on our next trip.

Whole Earth

This was the first vegetarian restaurant we visited in Singapore and some of us {especially the carnivores in our group} were pretty apprehensive. Whole Earth felt like the lovechild of a glamourised college cafeteria and a diner. The seating was simple and frankly, our expectations were not sky high. However, as the dishes arrived at our table our opinions transformed with every bite.

We started with the Monkey Head Nuggets {don’t worry, this is just tofu}- embellished with oatmeal – these are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and make for the perfect start to a meal. We equally loved the potato-based Nyonya Curry & paired it with a portion of XO rice for a dose of spice.

Joie By Dozo

As we walked into Joie By Dozo, we couldn’t help but marvel at the greenery all around. Situated on the roof of Orchard Central, the restaurant is built in a way that it looks like it is in the middle of a lush garden. We really loved the interiors- a classy mix of black, white and gold.

The place was buzzing with people even on a weekday and we couldn’t help but notice that it is quite popular with the ladies. A glimpse through the menu had us looking forward to Modern European dishes, using the freshest of produce- and yep, it’s completely meatless.

We opted for the seven-course lunch, where each course was marked with a palate cleanser. We began with the Pumpkin Veloute soup and Duo Ravioli Platter {duo of pumpkin and spinach ravioli, flower emulsion in basil cream sauce} both of which were exceptional. We closed the meal with the Iced Lemon Rose Tea and were just getting started with our day

Cafe Salivation

As we entered this tiny café on a rainy day, we were welcomed by the soothing voice of Jack Johnson and bright pink and orange coloured walls. And while the server tempted us with banana pancakes, the menu wooed us with cheese.

We started with a simple pita and hummus platter which succeeded in raising the bar for the rest of our meal. The Arancini came next- rice balls infused with lemongrass and tasted even better when paired with fresh spicy tomato salsa. Wild rice with vegetables like zucchini and carrots was another favorite on the table

PS: You can request for anything off the menu to be made sans onion and garlic.

Original Sin

Original Sin reminded us of a pizzeria you’d find on the banks of Venetian canals. We were greeted by warm, cosy interiors complemented by an equally friendly staff. We say for that romantic date you have been planning for months, head to this restaurant and surprise your loved one.

What’s on the menu, you ask? It is a mélange of Mediterranean and Italian fare including pizzas, pastas, lasagnas and salads along with a small selection of Indian dishes {for those of us who start missing good ol’ Indian food by the fifth day}. Out of the mix we ordered, the succulent Tandoori Mushrooms stood out in all their spicy glory. After the mozzarella-laden thin crust pizzas, of course.

Original Sin too can customise your meal by eliminating onion and garlic without compromising too much on the taste.

Genesis

If you’re a newly turned vegetarian, Genesis might be your jam. We were perplexed when we first looked at their menu as the vegan menu depicted pictures of the Singapore favorite chicken rice, roast chicken and tuna. Couple of conversations later with the staff, we found out that these were all mock meats. As non-vegetarians, the mock meats didn’t work too well with us but we would go back for their noodle bowls, dim sums, lasagnas and the Korean bibimbap.

They also sell organic vegan products such as almond butter and cookies.
