What Is It?

Originally built in 1920s, Taprobane Island comprises of two and a half acres of sheer tropical fantasy. It was Originally called Galduwa {Rock Island} and was later renamed after the Old Greek word for Sri Lanka by its most well-renowned owner, the self-titled Count de Mauny-Talvande.

Sri Lanka’s only privately-owned island has played host to kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers, aristocracy, writers etc. giving you colourful stories to share of the place’s rich history. With nothing lying between it and the South Pole, this fantasy island has a lot in store for you which makes it the perfect dream destination.

What’s So Unique About It?

How Do I Get There?

The island is just 200 yards off the Southern Coast in the centre of Weligama Bay. That amounts to a three hour drive south of Colombo’s International Airport. For guests wishing to come by helicopter, the journey takes less than one hour. It’s location is not far from the UN World Heritage site of Galle Fort.

Guests can also transfer directly from their international flights onto Sri Lankan Airlines Air Taxi and arrive in Galle (Koggala airport) in just 30 minutes. Koggala airport is only a 15- minute drive from Taprobane Island.

Access to the island is usually done wading through the shallow waters on foot. You can even book an elephant ride or sedan chair. If you want to get around for sightseeing, there are local cars and three-wheeler taxis (tuk tuks) which can be summoned.

With nothing between you and the South Pole, you might just find nirvana. A private island to yourself with all the luxury facilities sounds too good to be true, but it definitely is an option. The cost amounts to INR 1 – 2 Lakh per night depending on the number of people.
