Call it a classic Diliwala syndrome if you may, but I am the happiest when I gaze at the dark, starry night sky from atop a hill. When you’re a certain thousand feet above the sea level, your heart does seem lighter, almost floating amongst the milky white clouds that engulf you.

This piece is written in the memory of my most recent vacation where I got a chance to hide myself in the majesty of the hills of Kanatal. For the unaware, Kanatal is a tiny hill town 38 kilometres from Mussoorie and 12 from Chamba. It is literally the perfect place to hide from the crowd, with your only company being the lofty mountains and the cloudy sky.

A short drive (about six to seven hours) from Delhi, I experienced Kanatal through Avalon Cottages, the luxurious getaway where I stayed for the vacation. Since I’m a vacationer and not a traveller, I’m a big believer of the fact that it is the stay that makes or breaks your vacation. I’m a little spoiled that way — I do like all my comfort while I’m travelling, hence Avalon was right up my alley.

The stay was rich and loaded with views — the cottage I stayed in had big glass windows and a whole lot of open area to really take in the stunning views that surround you. This was perhaps the highlight of my stay there — the big glass doors in my room that opened straight into the huge balcony that was attached to it, and was completely snuggled by milky white clouds. The bed was big and spacious, and the interiors tastefully warm, with neutral tones of beige and grey and an overall cosy look.

I reached during lunch time, so of course, I was completely famished. Thankfully, I was treated to a home-style chicken curry, some pahadi ramja, rice, salad, rotis, and much more, and that chicken really did win my heart. Not because it was very elaborate or fancy, but mainly because of the sheer simplicity of the thin curry, which reminded me of the one I make at home.

After lunch, I explored the property a bit. The common living area had a TV (which wasn't working at the time) and some books (which I anyway was more interested in). The atmosphere was welcoming and cosy with snuggly blankets and throws placed generously. There was, of course, an attached balcony and the cool breeze automatically made me feel at peace and content. I spent the afternoon curled up in the spacious balcony that was attached to my room with a blanket, a cup of coffee and my current read. It's was one of those scarce peaceful moments that we work hard to achieve.

I took a tour of their popular dome stays, but I was more convinced with my wooden cottage. There's a second floor and an attic room, making it a great option for coming with your whole family.

The evening bonfire was pleasant and merry, and the night was comforting. Courtesy the electric blankets and the heater that kept me toasty, I soon drifted off to sleep.

Avalon is a great place to hide away from the world — it’s just slightly steep on the pocket, but it's worth it for the beautiful experience you'll have.
