I am one of those who loves a good book and a good reading nook to lock myself in, taking in the aroma of the pages, feeling the fonts against my skin, surrounded by the invisible barbed wires of plotlines, and characters that feel incredibly like me. But sure, call me a hypocrite as I do like indulging myself in the occasional audiobook from time to time, thanks to the innumerable book clubs I am a part of, all the book-loving friends I have gathered over the years, and the fact that I live alone. I need some constant noise to keep my solitude company.

For me, audiobooks fill the space between 'white noise' and 'entertainment,' something I listen to when I'm cooking, on a drive, or even better, in the metro when someone starts talking. They are a world of their own, helping you build and imagine characters and actions. They aren't here to replace books, but for me, these are creations that amplify their effect. Imagine Jim Dale taking you to Hogwarts or crying to Matthew Perry narrating his autobiography.

Now, if this short essay did not convince you to give audiobooks a try, here's a list of the top audiobooks I have been recommended by my book-loving friends. Do note that this recommendations list does not undermine the written word but must be seen as a list of experiences that enhance it.

Here's A List Of Best Audiobooks To Listen To

Listening to this audiobook feels like the patter of rain against your window. If you find non-fiction too difficult to read, try this audiobook so you don't miss out on these transformative, philosophical letters that nudge you towards some quiet introspection.

Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Imagine having a supremely intelligent yet diligent comedic genius as a guide to the galaxy. That's Stephen Fry's narration of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Every deadbeat silence, exasperated sigh, robotic computer alien quips, land as real as it can be in this British comedian's voice, making for guaranteed laughter riots in the dead of the night. The entire audiobook is an elevated tribute to the original classic that most of us readers obsess over. 42 may be the secret of the universe, but this audiobook is the secret to renewed appreciation of this genius novel.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

If you are looking to meet your reading goals while running, this is one audiobook you should listen to. It combines Murakami's profound sense of reality with Porter's reflective tone, making it feel like you are listening to a friend while on a run. No dramatic flair, no intervening jolts, just pure cadence that lilts you through your running journey. The book reflects on Murakami's personal experience with running and is an introspective journey you will love when narrated.

Author: Haruki Murakami

Narrator: Ray Porter

Genre: Memoir

The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy

Through hell, purgatory, and paradise, this book follows Dante's journey and is set in the 1300s, when the original poem was written. Dante is guided through each of the places by guides Virgil and Beatrice. While the texts rely on knowledge of art, history, and mythology, the audiobook is particularly useful for those who find it easier to 'listen' to history than pore through it. While so many versions of this book exist, the BBC unabridged audiobook retains the original poem's heavy renditions and is read out reverently, almost convincing you to read up on classical history. It is dramatised with multiple narrators and has a theatrical approach that really fleshes out the translation by Clive James.

Author: Dante Alighieri, Stephen Wyatt

Narrator: Blake Ritson, John Hurt, David Warner, Hattie Morahan

Genre: Poetry

Duration: 2 hours, 50 minutes

Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary

Spoiler alert: Project Hail Mary will ruin your tolerance for other audiobooks that are not IT. Ray Porter is a phenomenal narrator who captures all the emotions that the character feels. Even if you are not into science fiction (like me), this audiobook will convince you otherwise with Porter's voice scaling the lengths of emotionality and character development, emphasising the geekiness combined with the heartbreak faced by the character. The story follows Ryland Grace, who is the sole survivor on a mission that relies on him to save all of humanity. But, with his crewmates dead and his memory fuzzy, will he save the world or perish trying?

Author: Andy Weir

Narrator: Ray Porter

Genre: Science-based thriller

Duration: 16 hours, 10 minutes

Anxious People

Anxious People

Fredrik Backman is an amazing author, and I will die on the hill that Anxious People is one of his best works yet. The story takes place in Sweden, when a house viewing has turned into a hostage situation. As time ticks by, the people realise, the criminal might be one of them in the room and they need help. The book completely floored me, and the audiobook is not behind either, with its amazing narration that gives each of the characters depth. You will laugh and cry along with this one.

Author: Fredrik Backman

Narrator: Marin Ireland

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

Not A Very Good Murderer

Not A Very Good Murderer

Not A Very Good Murderer

This audio documentary follows Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Ronan Farrow in Paradise Valley, as he delves into the life of high-society socialite and former Miss Arizona Celia (Cece) Doane. Her elevated pageantry status granted her husbands in spades, but when she is declared a 'person of interest' in the murder case of two of her spouses, Ronan decides to unmask her murderous instincts. This audiobook is part character interviews and part narration that makes you realise that either she is not a very good murderer or that one of Ronan's sources is very unreliable, but which is it?

Narrator: Ronan Farrow

Genre: Audio documentary

Duration: 4 hours, 17 minutes

Daisy Jones And The Six

Daisy Jones And The Six

Daisy Jones And The Six

Daisy Jones and the Six follows this fictional band from the 70s who were increasingly famous, selling out stadiums on tour and clearing shelves of their albums...until they split up. The book is perfection, thanks to Taylor Jenkins Reid, but the audiobook version is pure genius, due to the band members being cast amongst narrators. If you box it up for being 'just another biopic,' then you are wrong: the audiobook gives dimension, depth, and passion to each of the characters, breaking the fourth wall with a radio documentary effect. It has sex, drugs, rock and roll, and a bittersweet love story that binds it all together.

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Narrator: Sara Arrington, Jennifer Beals, Arthur Bishop, Fred Berman,

Genre: Memoir

Duration: 9 hours, 3 minutes

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Though it has been adapted to a show as well, the unabridged audiobook version of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency takes the cake (and the readers) on a completely enjoyable ride through the book, to the extent where nothing makes sense and suddenly everything does. This is also one of those rare audiobooks that will persuade you to pick up the hard copy of the book. This hilarious story follows the escapades of Dirk Gently on a mysterious case. He helps a professor, unravels a mysterious murder, all while eating pizza and saving the human race from extinction (you're welcome!). While there are several versions of the book's audiobook, Stephen Mangan, with his iconic comedic tone, nails the assignment to the T.

Author: Douglas Adams

Narrator: Stephen Mangan

Genre: Adventure, Mystery

Duration: 7 hours, 58 mins

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl

If you are looking for a book that we can go a mile ahead to say, 'better than reading,' then it would be this one. The story follows a sadistic game show where to survive means to kill your prey in the most entertaining way possible. Every building on earth crumbles as the atomised humans are trapped in the dungeon, and to get out means gaining followers and entertaining the viewers of this 'show', which, for Carl, is more than just a game. Jeff Hays takes this book to a whole new level by voicing out different characters with different tones, switching it up to depict the change in scene and character, be it the gruff Carl or each of the shape-shifting roles of Mordecai.

Author: Matt Diniman

Narrator: Jeff Hays

Genre: Fantasy

Duration: 13 hours, 31 mins
