These 7 Exfoliating Scrubs Will Transform Your Skin Beyond Recognition

If there are two things I've learnt during my skincare journey it is; first, always apply sunscreen, and second have a weekly exfoliating routine. Exfoliation helps in getting rid of all the dead skin cells that have been sitting on your skin that also helps promoting cell renewal. Skin exfoliation can happen in two ways: Chemical exfoliators and physical exfoliators.

Physical Exfoliator: A physical exfoliator is anything that has exfoliating particles that can be seen, you have to scrub or massage it into your face. The small particles will help get rid of the dead cells through the physical application and constant moving of your hands in circular motions with said product. With physical exfoliators you have to be considerate with the type of scrub you use because if you use something too harsh it may cause more damage than harm.

Chemical Exfoliator: A chemical exfoliator is a solution that you need to apply to your face like a mask, leave on for a couple of minutes and all the actives in the serum will do the job for you while you sit and watch Netflix or read a couple of pages of a book. Usually this is an AHA/BHA peeling solution. You may feel a tingling sensation once you apply this, but that only means it's working (but if it feels like it's burning, please wash it off, always trust your intuition). With these types of exfoliants, you need to be considerate of the concentration of actives, as you don't want to start of with a high percentage. Make sure you're mindful and start to incorporate this slowly into your routine.

Be it chemical or physical, a good exfoliating scrub for you is something that works for you and gets you results. Here are the best exfoliating scrubs for the face on the market right now.

Those seeking the best of chemical and physical exfoliation, get your hands on the Wishful Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub. This one is gentle on the skin yet very effective thanks to the combination of pineapple and papaya enzymes, BHAs and AHAs that leave the skin smooth with a healthy glow. The product claims to give you long-lasting results within 10 days of use. The texture is lightweight, milky, and easily buffs off any dead cells in the most gentle manner. I've personally used this product and have to admit that it's unlike any other. Just after a couple of seconds of applying and massaging on your face you'll notice dead skin coming off like you've applied a mix of haldi and malai. It feels disgusting but more than that, satisfying to know that all of it is off my face now.

I tend to reach out for this exfoliator during the toughest battles with my skin, and it always helps. It's gentle and doesn’t feel like I’m tearing or tugging at my skin. While I'm not sure about the whitening it promises, it definitely leaves your skin with a subtle glow for a couple of hours after use. What I love about this product the most is that it's easily available every where, so if you need it right then and there you can just get it from a local pharmacy, it's value for money and gets the job done.

The Ordinary Peeling Solution is where I believe chemical exfoliators came to light, this product went viral on TikTok and then on Instagram, becoming a holy grail in many people's skincare routine. The concentration of AHA and BHA is quite strong (AHA 30%, BHA 2%), so I'd recommend doing a patch test before applying it to your entire face.

Type: Chemical

User rating: 4.4/5

User review: Makes skin much more smoother, helps with hyperpigmentation, can see difference from the first use, a must have product.

A product and brand that you've probably used once in your life. The Neutrogena Daily Scrub has micro exfoliating beads that help scrub off any dirt and dead cells sitting on top of your skin. It has salicylic acid that helps get an even deeper clean. I found this effective but a little harsh on my skin, so if you have sensitive skin I'd suggest going gentle on the scrubbing with this one.

Type: Physical exfoliator

User review: Value for money, small exfoliating beads help with whiteheads, leaves a glow after use.

Now, this product is something I used years ago but occasionally still go back to. The exfoliating beads can be quite harsh, but with a gentle massage, it does wonders to the skin. It left me with very supple and soft skin fully cleansed and deep cleaned — it felt like an everything shower for my face. While the product claims to be suitable for all skin types, I'd suggest avoiding it if you have sensitive skin. The scrub is made of natural exfoliators of cornflower and grain almond meal. It's also got a blend of tea tree, rose and lavender essential oils that helps regulate oil production.

Type: Physical

User review: Abirami G says, "An affordable exfoliating scrub. Never disappointed. I've been using this regularly for a long time."

Very similar to The Ordinary's peeling solution, this peeling solution is also one of user's favourites. It's easy, effective and quite potent (25% AHA, 5% PHA and 2% BHA). It leaves you with a natural glow and smooth skin with multi-level exfoliation resulting in a glow. Overall, it helps boost cell turnover, clears pores and reduces blackheads.

Type: Chemical exfoliator

User rating: 4.4/5

User reviews: Divyalaxmi says, "This is smooth as glass. I have sensitive and acne porn skin, I started using in the last 3 weeks, and it leaves my skin glowing. This is my second bottle. Please wear sunscreen while going out. Skin may get tan or sun damage if you don't use sunscreen."

One of the more expensive products, but people say that it's 100% worth it. This polisher comes in a powder format with rice bran extracts, which gently microfoliates the skin's surface, liquorice and grapefruit to brighten the skin, and pain enzymes and salicylic acid that helps in dissolving excess skin cells.

User review: Roshni K says, "I bought this 13gm bottle from Nykaa, and after cleansing my face and neck. It gave me instant brightness and smoother-looking skin in the first use and that’s what I loved about this product. It’s great for oily, congested skin, and it’s got gritty particles to slough off the upper dead skin layer and reveal brighter looking face. It helped with blackheads on my nose and chin to some extent too. I would definitely recommend it for all of those who are in their late 20’s and above, oily skin people who are looking for instant glow up"
