One of the things that I look forward to after my '9 to 5' is rushing home and enjoying a good meal while watching something nice. But as the universal problem stands, the food gets devoured before I decide on what to watch or go back to watching my comfort show. And though watching reruns of Modern Family suffices most days, sometimes you just want something fresh and unexpected.

Movies seem too long to sit through, and a new show requires too much commitment. Well, a very simple, elegant solution exists that I only recently really got into—short movies. Usually around 30 minutes or less, they are the perfect content to watch while having a meal or after a long day, making you discover and experience something new and fun. Here's my list of the seven best short movies!

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse

Based on an illustrated book by Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse is a beautiful short film that unfolds like a dream. Each utterance by the characters is a life quote to swear by, with beautifully done animation. It's a great film to watch when you are feeling a little lost because it would definitely leave you feeling hopeful.

Interior Cafe Night

Interior Cafe Night

We have always loved Nawazuudin Siddiqui's acting. Released in 2014, Interior Cafe Night is a short film that intimately captures two couples—one a little older and one a little younger—as they experience love, loss, separation, and reunion. The way of life in Kolkata is also a highlight of the movie, and it's a mesmerising watch overall.

Devi

A definite heavy watch, Devi delivers a poignant tale, shedding light on social stigmas, prejudices, and victim-blaming culture. It features a group of women who are rape victims, discussing whether to open up their already at-capacity home to the new victim. The end of the film leaves one in despair and is a work of art that stays with you for a long time.

The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar

The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar

This movie covers all the bases for an excellent watch, with some of the top actors in the industry. Directed by Wes Anderson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, and Ralph Fiennes, the film shows a gambler who has mastered an extraordinary skill that helps him win games. Each frame arrests you right in, and it's a super crisp and entertaining watch.

Gutthi

Gutthi

Winner of many accolades, Gutthi (which translates to a 'riddle') is an underrated gem that deserves much more spotlight. With stellar acting performances and great direction, this mystery-suspense drama could beat many top-rated movies and web series in the same genre. The story revolves around a night-long conversation between a writer (who is in a slump) and a garbage collector, eventually leading to shocking revelations. The word 'captivating' doesn't do justice to this movie, and you have to watch it to know why.

The Neigbour's Window

The Neighbors' Window

Winner of the Best Live Action Short Film in 2020, 'The Neighbour's Window' is a poignant parable exploring themes of love, loss, freedom, ageing, and escape. The film’s ending delivers a powerful shift in perspective, reminding you of the important things in life and the significance of gratitude. The movie stunningly captures the monotony of a middle-aged woman’s daily routine, juxtaposed with the seemingly glamorous life of a young couple living across from her.

Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know...

Winner of the La Cinef First Prize at Cannes 2024, 'Sunflowers Were The First One To Know...' is a remarkable Kannada short film. Drawing from old folklore, it tells the story of an elderly woman and her family who are exiled after stealing the village's rooster, causing chaos and disruption within the community. Raw and beautifully crafted, this film is an experience every cinephile should have at least once.
