Recently, I got into pottery and ceramics as a serious hobby and realised how much effort goes into creating a single cup. From preparing the clay to throwing, trimming and firing — there are just so many stages that require so much time, knowledge and craftsmanship.
Even though the ceramics market is saturated right now, Khanoom has managed to create something completely different. I'd say that they're not in the business of selling earthenware crockery but rather art that's functional because that's just how good their collection looks. The founders Priyamvada Golcha and Simon Marks have done an exceptional job at ensuring that their collection stands apart. This Jaipur-based brand started about three years ago (in 2020) with the aim of creating tableware that marries traditional techniques with a contemporary twist influenced by East and West sensibilities (what a fantastic job they've done!) and also ensures that the slow craft of pottery thrives, providing a livelihood for artisans involved in Jaipur and Rajasthan.
The current range of evocative tableware includes plates, platters, tea cups and saucers, tumblers, bowls, and goblets. Everything you see is made with love by hand and glazed in custom lead-free and non-toxic glazes. Their choice of floral and botanical prints is heavily inspired by De Materia Medica encyclopaedia on herbal medicine; paired with beautiful and vibrant colours, their products will enhance the beauty of any tablescape.
All the information about each piece can be found in their catalogue and can be shopped by dropping them a DM on Instagram. Their usual standard shipping time is four to six weeks, so if you plan to get something for the festive season, I suggest ordering now!
They also host a bunch of half-day-long workshops in Jaipur, if you wish to closely understand the process of painting pottery. All the materials are provided to you, and you can take your pieces home after a couple of days, once they have fired them. You can keep tabs on their social media channels for the next workshop. They also displayed their collection at the G20 summit held in New Delhi in 2023.
