When the present times are all about watching heritage turn modern and seeing Indian maximalism wash into clean, white minimalism, whether at home or in how we dress, it’s refreshing to see brands like Mookuthi root us back in our culture. They remind us just how beautiful Indian heritage really is. And they do it through the smallest yet most impactful ornament: the nose pin (Mookuthi in Tamil), a symbol of culture and community.

To know more about the mastermind behind the brand, we reached out to the founder and designer himself, Sarath Selvanathan, who shared his personal favourites!

"I've always been fascinated by how Steve Jobs makes an object out of a product. The length to which he'd get into product details, user experience, space design, storytelling - all keeping human emotions at the centre! I grew up witnessing him visualise and realise a different world, one product (object) at a time - it's surreal. Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs has always been a go-to, to randomly open the book & read a page or two."

Favourite Restaurant

"It's a tough one, for I have many favourites. I've always found comfort in Asian food, and I enjoy my solo dates at some places in Chennai. Good old Cascade, dishing out exceptional indian-chinese for decades now, is a go-to. I equally love Zhouyu, Chap Chay, Dahlia, and Aeseo in Chennai. Ghee dosai at Geetha Cafe or Maris with filter coffee is a great pick-me-up, too."

Favourite Travel Destination

"I live a suitcase life these days, travelling 15 days a month. The idea of a travel destination has completely changed from what it used to be - I now look for calm, peace, and do nothing kind of a holiday, strolling around temples or artist studios or forest spaces or someplace where everything is slow. On that note, my recent go-to list, that I can keep going back to, is Chettinad, Auroville, and Goa."

Favourite Home Decor Designer/Brand

Attirail

"I love all things old and also what one can do with old objects as well as spaces. I love exploring local antique markets and something about those old objects. As for designers, I enjoy witnessing how Purva Agrawal of Attirail transforms a space. In addition, I love the work Chandini of Vyala is doing with objects and spaces."

Favourite Coffee Brand

"A friend has been supplying a lovely roast over the past couple of months, which I love. I hope he makes a brand out of it someday, but otherwise it's Marc's, Coffee Trotter, True Black, and Roastery Coffee House."

Favourite Artwork/Artist

"I'm a noob in this realm, perhaps in the beginning stages of this tangent. But of the ones I have been exposed to, Banksy's work is very intriguing, and of course, Ravi Varma's work has been something that I cannot not mention here. About a year ago, one of Ravi Varma's lithographs found its way to me after being abandoned by a home in Chettinad. The restoration journey of this torn/folded lithograph drew me closer to his work."

Favourite Clothing Brand

Nicobar

"I enjoy easy breezy clothing - Nicobar is a favourite that always has something. I also like playing with fabric, currently playing with chendamangalam cotton, and Swathy from the Button Thief Company has been indulging me with silhouettes."

"Lenskart got me to experiment with my frames. It's been a decade now, & they've lasted me years. But recently, I tried the homegrown indian brand COCO LENI & have been in love with it. They are special and amazing for sure!"
