Released in August of 2021, Only Murders In The Building is a mystery-comedy starring Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez. The plot had a grip on us from scene 1, the premise essentially follows three strangers who live in an upscale New York apartment building — The Arconia— who share a fascination for true crime podcasts. However, things take a turn when a murder happens in their own building and they find themselves making a true crime podcast of their own. Needless to say, over the past three years, this show has made its mark on us, especially with the uniqueness of the genre itself. And there's no wonder why we brood a bit after each season finishes.

So to curb that, once season 5 finishes, here are a few more shows just like Only Murders In The Building.

Shows Like Only Murders In The Building

The Residence

The Residence

The Residence follows a mystery inside the White House with its staff, guests, and rooms as the closed circle of suspects. Emmy nominated, it is similar to Only Murders In The Building simply because both the shows seamlessly mix mystery, dark humour, and have a cast of people who are investigating a murder. While in OMITB the murder is limited to the apartment building, in The Residence the muder is limited to the White House. In both cases, they make for a juicy, bingeable whodunit.

Cast: Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Randall Park

Sirens

Sirens

Both shows mix mystery, dark humour, and a confined situation with high stakes. While Only Murders… has a murder-investigation in an apartment building and Podcasters as sleuths, Sirens has a cultish, power-laced weekend at a luxury estate where personal secrets, disturbance and suspicion build up. In both, you get eccentric characters, tension among a small set, plus comedy arising from uncomfortable truths.

Cast: Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock

Where To Watch: Netflix

IMDb Rating: 6.7/10

Duration: 1 season, 8 episodes

The Afterparty

The Afterparty

The Afterparty is a murder-mystery comedy and much like OMITB, they both are known to blend humour with quirky suspects in a whodunit atmosphere. The show retells a murder through different characters’ perspectives, each episode styled as a different genre (musical, rom-com, thriller, etc.), making it both playful and unpredictable. The cast includes Tiffany Haddish as Detective Danner, Sam Richardson as Aniq, Zoë Chao as Zoë Zhu, plus Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, to name a few. What makes it special is its inventive storytelling structure, where every retelling not only adds clues but also mirrors the personality of the narrator.

Cast: Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson

Death And Other Details

Death And Other Details

Death and Other Details is a mystery-drama that revolves around a murder within a small circle with a cast of wealthy and suspicious characters, and a clever sleuth trying to clear an accused while digging into secrets. In the show, the lead, Imogene Scott becomes the prime suspect when a locked-room murder happens aboard a luxury ocean liner, and she must team up with the once-famous detective Rufus Cotesworth (whom she despises) to prove her innocence. The show is fast-paced, enjoyable, and similar to OMITB when it comes to solving more than the crime at hand.

Cast: Violet Beane, Pardis Saremi, Mandy Patinkin

Based On A True Story

Based On A True Story

If you're a true crime podcast fanatic then you'll watch this show eyes closed. (Well not literally we hope). Based on a True Story is a dark-comedy thriller that mirrors Only Murders in the Building with its unique mix of true crime obsession, mystery, and quirky people getting tangled up in murder in unexpected ways. The show follows Ava Bartlett, her husband Nathan and their acquaintance Matt (Tom Bateman) who happens to be an active serial killer. While the show might come across as unbelieable at times, it is still a juicy watch which will keep you hooked throughout. What’s special about it is its satirical take on true crime fandom and podcast culture, its characters who are morally mess—and the blend of absurdity, danger and dark humour in how far people will go in pursuit of fame, money, or survival.

Cast: Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman;

The Perfect Couple

The Perfect Couple

A glamorous, tight-knit event, a cast that is just as glamorous, and a death that makes everyone a suspect. The Perfect Couple is a show that will have you loungeing at one point, and at the edge of your seat the next— much like OMITB. It stars Nicole Kidman as Greer Garrison Winbury (a powerful matriarch and novelist), Liev Schreiber as her husband Tag, Eve Hewson as the bride Amelia Sacks, and Billy Howle as Benji Winbury (the groom), and others. It is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, the setting of Nantucket’s high-society secrets, lush wedding aesthetics, and the twisty-mystery embedded in familial drama.

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Eve Hawson

Where To Watch: Netflix

IMDb Rating: 6.5/10

Duration: 1 season, 6 episodes

Bodkin

Bodkin

The things that Bodkin and OMITB have in common are that both are darkly comic mystery thrillers that revolve around true-crime podcasters who are digging into past disappearances, secrets, suspects, while the tension between what's real and what isn't is palpable. The series follows Dove, Gilbert, and Emmy as they investigate the vanishing of three people during a Samhain festival in the small Irish coastal town of Bodkin. What we like is the blend of podcaster obsession, folklore (Irish traditions like Samhain), the small-town setting, dark humour, and how it plays with unreliable narratives.

Cast: Will Forte, Siobhan Cullen

Where To Watch: Netflix

IMDb Rating: 6.9/10

Duration: 1 Season, 7 episodes

Bored To Death

Bored To Death

What we love about the show Bored to Death is that much like OMITB, it is a quirky comedy-mystery that revolves around amateur sleuthing, oddball humour, and characters who don’t exactly fit the traditional detective mold. In Bored to Death, Jonathan Ames, a struggling writer in Brooklyn, starts moonlighting as an unlicensed private investigator, dragging along his best friends Ray and George into strange cases, emotional entanglements, and absurd situations. What’s special about it is its highlighting of neurotic New York characters, vintage-detective tropes turned sideways, friendship dynamics and moral grey areas.

Cast: Ten Danson, Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis

IMDb Rating: 7.8/10

Duration: 3 Seasons, 24 episodes
