When Stranger Things first dropped in 2016, it gave us more than what we were expecting. Maybe it’s the nostalgic trip to the 80s, the inter-dimensional monsters, the government secrets, or telekinetic kids battling forces beyond comprehension. There’s something about Stranger Things that just hits the right spot.

To be fair, it also became the grounds for the rise of cocktail shows where the genre is of the show itself is well, a cocktail. If you were asked to describe Stranger Things, we’re sure there won’t be a specific genre that you can put to it. That’s because, the show is tonally stressed if not fully dissonant — one minute you’re in a sci-fi thriller, the next minute you’re fighting Demogorgons all while in a fictional town of Hawkins, which ends up becoming a character in itself. So is it supernatural? Sci-fi? Thriller? Coming-of-age fantasy? The answer is yes to all of this and more.

But if we had to choose the glue that holds all of it together, it would be the perfect blend of Sci-fi with supernatural or fantasy elements that make up for a great thriller. And that’s what we have kept in mind while curating this list of 10 shows that are similar to Stranger Things.

10 Shows Like Stranger Things That Blend Sci-Fi And Supernatural

I Am Not Okay With This

I Am Not Okay With This

If you love Eleven and how she slowly discovered her powers and the teen angst warped in a mystery, you’ll love I Am Not Okay With This. The story revolves around a high schooler Sydney, who is dealing with the grief of her father’s suicide, puberty and the awkwardness of adolescence only to realise she’s developing superpowers that erupt with her emotions. It’s dark, sarcastic, and, quietly intense—echoing the same journey Eleven had on Stranger Things. The setting includes a small town that is small, almost claustrophobic and feels like you’re seconds away from a major blow-up.

Paper Girls

Paper Girls

The best way to describe Paper Girls is to think Stranger Things meets Doctor Who but make it a female-led situation and slightly more existential. It starts on Halloween in 1988 and follows how four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls are accidentally thrown into the future and come face-to-face with their adult selves. The plot sees them uncovering a grand-scale battle between time-traveling factions. Retro charm, a group dynamic of kids navigating chaos and a thick layer of sci-fi lore, it’s a perfect watch after your Stranger Things binge.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is dark, stylish, and chaotic in the best way possible. It’s a story of  seven adopted siblings born under mysterious circumstances who have supernatural powers and are trained to be heroes by their emotionally distant ‘father.’ This one’s a total win if you’re into tropes that are all about secret experiments that can lead to a world-ending consequences. There’s time travel, an impending apocalypse, alternate timelines, telekinesis and end-of-world prophecy visions.

Dark (TV Series)

Dark (TV Series)

If you thought Upside Down was confusing, you’ll be drawing family trees on your walls with red strings after watching Dark. This German sci-fi masterpiece follows four families in an eerie small town as they investigate the disappearance of two children and accidentally uncover a mind-bending saga of time loops, alternate dimensions, and an age-old secret society. It’s haunting, dense, emotionally charged and gets better (read: darker) with every episode. If Stranger Things is a rollercoaster, Dark is a black hole—you get sucked in and can’t come out until it’s over.

The Irregulars

One of the most underrated shows, Irregulars takes a unique spin on Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Set in Victorian London, the series shows a bunch of street-smart supernatural teens helping Dr. Watson in solving a series of strange and increasingly sinister cases. Outer Range

Outer Range

Set in Wyoming, Outer Range follows a rancher who discovers a mysterious void in the middle of his land that doesn’t follow the rules of time or space. What follows is a part family drama, part cosmic horror and part sci-fi thriller that makes you question reality. There’s a lingering tension throughout the series that something bigger, ancient, terrifying and totally unexplainable is at play; as nature is seen as the ultimate supernatural force. You may find the pace of the show to be slow but it’s worth it.

The OA

The OA

This one show burrowed into my brain and never really left. It starts with Prairie, a young woman who returns home after seven years of disappearance with a restored eyesight and new abilities. She calls herself ‘The OA’ and recruits five locals to rescue more missing individuals by opening a portal to another dimension. The story unfolds in layers with near-death experiences, parallel dimensions and a group of misfit teens. The tone is haunting yet weirdly poetic and the payoff — well, you’ll just have to watch and decide.
