A sliding door design refers to a type of door that opens when you slide it horizontally instead of swinging it open. Sliding doors are great if you're short on space since they don't interfere with the space when open. Nowadays, sliding doors have become the preferred choice of doors when it comes to wardrobe designs, not just because of how efficient and space-saving they are but also because of how clean and minimal they look, occupying little space visually too, as most of the time just blend seamlessly with your wall.

Materials

Glass: This type of sliding wardrobe design gives a peak into what's inside your wardrobe, so I'd suggest skipping this if you're slightly messy. I'd highly suggest this for the part of your cupboard where you keep accessories, bags and shoes as it will let you have a quick glance when getting ready without having to open your wardrobe, and when not in use, act as a display. You can also play with fluted or frosted mirror if you don’t want to see inside the cupboard.

Wood: A solid wooden sliding door is also a classic option that provides a rustic touch to your room. With wood, you can have lots of options for the type of wood and also the finish you want to go with. You can also choose to get carvings or leave it as is, the options are endless, as wood is a versatile material.

Mirror: Mirrors are an excellent choice if you have a small space as they tend to give the illusion of doubling up the existing space. A sliding door can give you the opportunity to add a huge end-to-end mirror that will make your space look bigger but also act as a full-length mirror for your dressing area.

Metal: Metal is a sturdy option for your sliding wardrobe design. A full metal door isn’t usually used as a wardrobe door for home but more from commercial purposes (from what I know). For home, I'd suggest using metal with a combination of other materials, metal and glass is one popular combination that gives a clean and industrial look to a space.

Things To Consider

It goes without saying that maintenance comes with almost anything that you choose to install in your home, and a sliding door is no exception. The maintenance would differ according to the type of material you choose go with, but in general make sure to clean it regularly to prevent bacteria, and to oil to keep it sliding smoothly.

While a sliding wardrobe design saves space you obviously need to consider the width of your area, as the hinges itself occupy anywhere upwards of 2 inches.
