A rainy day in Rajasthan is undeniably whimsical, and at The Oberoi Rajvilas, Jaipur, that whimsy is amplified a hundredfold. Spread over 30 acres of immaculate luxury, this sanctuary feels like stepping into a Rajput-era painting, complete with fortress walls, a restored 18th-century Shiva temple, and service that borders on clairvoyant.
Rajvilas sits about 20 minutes from Jaipur's chaotic, wonderful Pink City, close enough for day trips to Amber Fort, City Palace, and Hawa Mahal, and far enough that the only sounds you hear at night are fountains and the calls of peacocks.
The property is designed around traditional Rajasthani architecture: hand-carved sandstone, latticed jali screens, grand chandeliers, and terracotta-hued buildings arranged around manicured gardens (a signature Oberoi touch). When the monsoon showers arrive, the terracotta pinks and lush greens seem to take on a new life, with peacocks fanning out in full display. And mind you, those peacocks aren't a rare treat. With over a hundred residing within the fortress walls, you are essentially co-living with them the moment you step outside your room, a fact that never quite stops being extraordinary.
At the heart of it all is a centuries-old temple set on a lily pond, around which the resort was literally built. It's theatrical without being excessive, more like a very generous maharaja decided to open his private estate to guests, welcoming them to soak in the culture and the khatirdari.
